About Evan

I have been playing Dungeons and Dragons for about a decade or more, I started as a player and eventually became a Dungeon Master. I played a homebrewed campaign that lasted about 4 years with close friends where I played as a Druid of the Moon that was inflicted with Lycanthropy. Unfortunately our DM was unable to finish the campaign and after about a year of one-shot games I finally made the jump to run my own campaign with a close group of 4 friends. My campaign was a mix of homebrew and wizards of the coast content and lasted about 3-4 years until the party finally completed their task, saving the multiverse from collapsing into itself and ending all life. After about a 6 moth hiatus my players were itching to start playing again and we also were introducing a brand new player to Dungeons and Dragons, I didn't want to write a brand new campaign so it was only intended to be a world in which the players could accept bounties and quests, hunt large "monster hunter" style monsters and dungeon crawl. I underestimated how detail oriented and lore driven my players were. Their backstories were so well written and so rich and involved with the world I created for them, that I could not help but feel inspired to write the campaign around them and give them an amazing story, and here we are about 2-3 years into the campaign and still going strong. At first I envied not being able to be a player, but I truly enjoy being a forever DM.

I became a GM because

I love Dungeons and Dragons and I had a number of friends that were interested in trying the game out. Without being able to find someone to be our Game Master, my game knowledge drove me to make an attempt being the GM so my friends had the opportunity to experience the game like I had.

The three words my players would use to describe me are...

Immersive, Friendship, Cunning. I like to immerse not only my players but myself in a game a run. I like to promote a friendly atmosphere where all feel comfortable and welcome. And I love to blindside my players with a surprise twist or a great out of pocket encounter.

When I'm not running games I'm...

Drawing or gaming with friends, if not running another campaign with my close friends. xD I'm also working with a friend trying to make a comic book/graphic novel from our first DnD campaign.

How Evan runs games

I like to do my best to learn what every player enjoys and structure my sessions to appeal to everyone as best I can. No two players are ever the same and have their own interests, some prefer the role play, some prefer fighting, or dungeon crawling, some prefer numbers and min-maxing their characters. I personally as a DM love role playing and often reward players for their role play in game, but I also greatly appreciate creativity and intuitive thinking and reward a smart player just as much. I like to try giving players the option of overcoming a situation using anything from puzzles, role play, or straight up combat, trying to grant as much freedoms as possible.

I love it when a player

Gets involved in the world and lore, coming up with a rich and thorough backstory. Also when a player is creative when faced with a challenge or fight.

I think metagaming...

has a time and place, but should mostly be avoided if possible. I feel like it can take away from the impact of a conflict or story during gameplay.

I think min/maxing...

Is a smart way to play, but should not be the only focus on a player character. Focusing on only the numbers may leave players feeling bored during some of the more role play moments which I like to include in my campaigns, though I try to keep an even balance of role play and combat.
