About Richard Parrington

I have been running TTRPG's for around 15 years. I began with Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader, but have run a variety of systems including, but not limited to, Fabula Ultima, Star Trek Adventures, Age of Sigmar Soulbound, Pugmire, Mass Effect 5e and Polymorph. I have recently focused my GMing on running games at Conventions but I have also run home games for longer campaigns. Several years ago my friends and I produced an Actual Play series on Youtube with myself as the GM, although I admit the audio and Video quality was somewhat lacking. My GM style is to focus on a strong narrative and role play elements, my favorite moments both as a player and a GM are always those deep emotional roleplay moments where we are able to dig into a character and really see what makes them tick.

I became a GM because

I really wanted to play a TTRPG, and no one near me was running one. So I had my own Thanos moment, ‘fine, I’ll do it myself’.

My favorite system of all Time is

Still Rogue Trader. Are its rules needlessly complex? Is it possible to create completely broken builds? Does damage calculation take ages unless you build a spreadsheet to do the calculations for you? Absolutely yes. But you know what they say, you never forget your first love.

When I'm not running games I'm...

Working on my Warhammer Painting, and going to an obscene number of Fan Conventions with my wife.

How Richard Parrington runs games

My focus as a GM is always on telling a fun cooperative story. The most wonderful moments that I have experienced as both a GM and a Player are those moments of connection as strong Roleplaying leads to surprisingly deep emotional wells. I love taking a character that at first seems like a one note comic relief only to make players shed a tear for them as they learn of their tragic past, or else have players stand up in the defense of a character they once hated because they have come to see them as a friend. With that said I also adore when the dice tell their own tale. During my first ever campaign I had a player whose 'Servo Skull' pet kept punching way above it's weight class due to lucky roles, and I wrote in backstory and explanation for this that ended up creating a major new plot hook that never would have happened without those roles. Ultimately I want to tell collaborative stories with my players and I want to see where they and I will travel together.

My favorite trope is...

The redeemed villain. I love taking a character that the players hate by the end of session 2 and making them someone they would die for by then end of session 20. If I do it right they barely realise it’s happening.

My games focus on...

Character interactions, both between players and with myself. There will be combat but I really want us to dig into these characters and breath some life into them.

When it comes to voices

I’m a competent voice actor, though I’m not the best at accents. You’ll get the tone and emotion I want to impart, but most NPC’s will be suspiciously British.

Richard Parrington's ideal table

My table is a place for collaboration, we are working together to tell a story, that does mean I don’t tolerate anyone trying to be the ‘main character’ all the time. With that said there may be sessions that focus more on one player than others, but I want to ensure everyone gets their chance in the spotlight. It should also be a fun place full of laughter, and banter. Just don’t interrupt the villain monologue, it’s one of my favourite things.

I love it when a player

Comes up with a crazy ‘this just might work’ plan that I had not prepared for. It shows I’m not just dragging you through the prepped plot.

I think min/maxing...

Can be fun, if everyone is doing it. Having one player with a broken build puts the spotlight on them too much and takes away everyone else’s fun. As such I would tend to avoid it except in very specific groups.

My table is not the place for...

Any disrespect to each other. I’m fine with you playing a character with prejudices but if those ever come out of character we are going to have words. Likewise my table is a safe place for any race, gender, sexual orientation etc. Anyone who makes it not that will be asked to leave.
