About Ryan Watkiss

I've been playing DnD for over a decade both as a player and a GM in classic DnD settings, homebrew worlds, Star Wars RPGs and other TTRPGs such as Mythic Bastionlands. I love crafting a world, filling it with intrigue and potential hooks and seeing where the players take their own adventure. I've run campaigns for completely new players and players with twice the experience I have and they've all been a blast. In addition to DnD, I also have a few years of LARP experience and a lifelong passion for fantasy and science fiction worlds which both lend themselves well to roleplay and solid worldbuilding. Aside from that I'm a queer 30 year old guy who loves comic books, Star Wars, How To Train Your Dragon, fantasy books and dice. I run sessions in person and online, in both I use my gaming table and collection of hand-painted miniatures to help set the scene as well as images for specific references.

How Ryan Watkiss runs games

I lean towards the roleplay element rather than combat heavy sessions so that the combat feels more impactful when it happens and has potential to be more lethal. I prefer to run a milestone progression system rather than XP. The main thing I focus on is creating a full world for you to interact with, every conversation could lead somewhere else.

I deal with rules issues by...

Referring to rulebooks, weighing up the value of the rule and how impactful it will be on the game, make a ruling and then stick with that for the campaign.

I prep by

Creating a vast and complex world, which I fill in more detail relevant to the campaign and the direction players wish to take the narrative.

Ryan Watkiss's ideal table

I love when a table has people who think differently to each other, diversity is amazing and can create some really cool roleplay moments. I always make sure we chat through what people want out of the game at the very beginning and want to see players reacting to the wonderful things happening with/to their characters. If you get really into the roleplay I'll likely reward that with more opportunity to do so.
