About Matt

Hi, I'm Matt! I am a GM of 11 years and player of more than 30 years. An avid gamer and roleplayer since childhood, I started GMing seriously as an adult and now make it my mission to put on fun games, help players tell and experience epic stories and bring new players into the hobby. Originally from a D&D background, I have run campaigns in D&D 3e, 5e, Numenera, Star Wars (FFG), The Expanse and Pathfinder 2 and played in even more. My other interests include video gaming, illustration, martial arts and Warhammer.

How Matt runs games

Combat: I come from a dungeon crawl, combat-heavy background, so my games will often feature a lot of tactical combat. I almost always use a grid or hex map to keep track of positions, and the maps will use differing elevations, cover, hazards, scenery, climbable objects, and other elements to make battles interesting. Story: My games will use story structures and beats underlying the sessions. I try to maintain good pacing to keep things engaging, and I like using elements of character backstories to make things more player-relevant. My villains and npcs will have plausible in-world motivations for their actions, thus making the story feel alive. Roleplay: I enjoy in-character roleplay and appreciate hearing people's thoughts and comments as characters. I encourage decisions that reflect what their character might do, even if not optimal. I try to fill games with NPCs who have evocative personalities, thoughts, and motivations. I love it when players are able to negotiate creative ways out of situations I never anticipate but encourage nonetheless. Voices: I often change my accent, cycling through different tones and using various English city accents to accentuate the personalities of NPCs and differentiate them in players' minds. However, I'm definitely not a trained voice nor stage actor. Genre: I tend to alternate between heroic fantasy and gritty scifi. Puzzles: My games tend to have fewer puzzles than most others, but they may appear occasionally.

I deal with rules issues by...

ruling in favour of the players. For clarifications, looking them up quickly, but making a ruling and moving on if it takes too long or is too disruptive.

My games focus on...

Tactical Combat, Roleplaying, exploration, narrative and fun.

Matt's ideal table

My table tends to be calm, focused on the game but also laid back and with constant laughter. I like the table to be able to follow the plot, roleplay and make decisions seriously, but at the same time we can laugh about silly things in the game, the ridiculousness of the situation and the peculiar solutions that end up working. Snacks are also a necessity, preferably chocolate ones. I will always use a gridded battle mat, I try to encourage tactical play, will try to follow the game rules unless it slows the game down unnecessarily. I like players to roleplay to the degree they are comfortable.
