About Daniel

Hi, my name is Daniel and I am a very experienced DM since 15 years ago, i have played and dmed a multitude of systems such as The Dark Eye 4th and 5th Edition, Shadowrun, Legend of the 5 rings, DnD, Pathfinder 1st and second edition, Mythic Bastionland, Fabula Ultimate and a lot more... I have a huge emphazis on roleplay, charachter storylines and immersive worlds, which i build myself. I use map making tools such as dungeon draft to create unique perspectives and custom experiences for my players. Annother huge pillar in my session is exploration and combat, i find it important that combat is meaningful and isnt just "annother dungeon" that it is embedded within the story line and gives not only combat fans something to strategize over but also players an opportunity to highlight their charachter, their morals and their evolution within the campaign. It is always important to me to learn the player preferences to tailor the campaign to the needs of the group, so that no one feels neglected

My 3 systems I'd bring to a desert island would be

Pathfinder 2E for a generalistic fantasy system. It is in very in depth, "crunchy" but at the same generalistic enough that it allows homebrew. Shadowdark and DCC A very simple RPG focussed on the basics of combat and roleplay. Fabula Ultimate for a lightweight and synergistic JRPG like TTRPG

My favorite shows/movies are

I really like the TV Shows Twin Peaks, True Detective and Fargo. All of them have a very strong atmosphere and central mystery, that is building up over time transforming the charachters and their relationships within each other. A lot of these qualities should be present in any good TTRPG campaign.

The three words my players would use to describe me are...

Improvisational - Going with the flow of the players and adjusting my sessions on the fly. Not clinging to plits and railroading them. Atmospheric - Setting the mood with music, dungeon maps and voices of NPCs Open for Criticism - When there is an issue or concern, i am always reachable

How Daniel runs games

I lean heavily into roleplay, immersive world building and both overarching story lines as well player specific storylines. It is important to me that the players feels they are a part of the world, not some external force intruding into it, that every NPC and part of the world is just like them and worthy of consideration. That every encounter, every puzzle to be solved has its own justification and reason for being there. That the players through their experience too will evolve, through what they learned, see and hear.

I prep by

Making a general structure in Obsidian (note taking app), going over what maps or scenes are needed in Foundry (virtual Tabletop) or creating new ones in Dungeondraft or Campaign Cartographer 3, which playlist music might need to be added or adjusted and ever present answering players DMs.

My favorite trope is...

Long forgotten Civilisations, Ancient Mysteries and forgotten Knowledge. There is just something about this trope, most memorable in movies such as Indiana Jones, that intrigues me. It probably doesnt help, that as a kid i was obsessed with ancient humanity, particulary in greece and rome.

Rules are...

Tools that mean to facilitate a fun roleplaying experience. If a rule is protruding to that or feels "clunky" in the moment. Then it is not needed. A TTRPG Rulebook is not a Bible that needs to be adhered to every word and should be adjusted both to campaign and the needs of the group.

Daniel's ideal table

The best thing a player can be is to be engaged, immersed in the story and having a good time. I want the sessions to be fully focussed on the game, so its always good if discussion out of the game could be limited. I like a variety of playstyles whether that be heavy dungeoncrawling, roleplaying, exploring and so on. So the individual focus on each game and the players that are attracted to that depends on the tone of the individual campaign. When i run a Campaign in Shadowdark, that might be more combat oriented, than a narrative heavy campaign than in e.g. Pathfinder.
