About Alexander

A GM living and working in Tokyo. Co-owner of a board game cafe and IRL professional GM. 16 years of TTRPG experience. Always open to hosting a one-shot for your preexisting group or adding you to one of my groups. Just message me or join one of my instant signup games. A balanced style GM who loves both fun roleplay and clever rules-based combat. Improvisation-heavy sessions are very normal for me. A solid world setting, a well-planned narrative and characters, and everything else is up to your actions. I love the sandbox experience. It is important to me that all players feel welcome and come away with a unique experience.

People are always surprised when I tell them

That combat is not my favorite part of games. Althought I put a lot of effort into running encounters and combat sessions. I often find that the lead up to the fight or the atmosphere of the fight is actually more interesting that the literal spells cast etc.

The three words my players would use to describe me are...

Considerate, Prepared, Subvertive I am considerate of people's feelings and also considerate in-game for context and reasoning. I am always prepared. Whether literally for the session or when ready to improv your interesting roleplay actions. I often subvert expectations of the outcomes of play.

When I'm not running games I'm...

Creating terrain, minis, and other media for my campaigns. I also work at a board game cafe where I play all sorts of games from Party Games to Heavy Euro games.

How Alexander runs games

I'm a British DM living in Japan with 16 years of experience and a real passion for the game. I am also a professional IRL DM. I love bringing NPCs to life, both the serious ones who grow with the party and the ridiculous ones you'll never forget but may never see again. I tailor them to your characters, and I enjoy watching real relationships form, whether it's a trusted friend or a sworn enemy. Improvisation-heavy sessions are very normal for me. A solid world setting, a well-planned narrative and characters, and everything else is up to your actions. I love the sandbox experience. I respect clever thinking. Players who take good notes, think things through, and use in-game connections always get rewarded. I also appreciate when players try to act with their character’s mind, not just their own. Sessions are a safe space, and I expect everyone to treat each other with kindness, patience, and courtesy. We’re all here to have fun, tell great stories, and support each other at the table. I don’t do long monologues or dominate the table with NPCs. I believe in keeping the spotlight shared and the pacing smooth. My goal is to make a world that feels alive and reacts to what you do in it.

My favorite trope is...

The "Has the right spirit" kind of unhelpful NPC. I often hope this NPC softens up the tougher characters to caring.

My games focus on...

Player agency within a larger narrative. I try to tie all player actions to the larger narrative, even if they seem unrelated. I reward exploration that furthers the plot indirectly. Meeting the right NPC because you bothered to ask how someone's day was going or noticed their insignia etc.

When it comes to voices

You won't find me doing voices that will throw you out of immersion. Having also lived internationally for many years my characters will often feel very nuanced to certain cultures.

Alexander's ideal table

Players who want the support of the GM. They don't have to know all the rules. Those who are happy to go with the flow but care about the outcomes. Those who are fans of the characters of everyone else. Those who thrive in failure and confusion. Those who love to be bamboozled.

I love it when a player

does something so expected that it becomes unexpected. A "you are right, your character probably would do that" moment.

I think min/maxing...

Only fun if it is clever and doesn't waste time. Being the strongest doesn't make you the most interesting. Time should be shared and enjoyed by all.

My table is not the place for...

Sulking. A carefree and rolling with the punches attitude is good.
