About ImprovBuck

I'm a professional improviser, writer, and storyteller with over 20 years of experience building stories with people. I've taught improv and headlined festivals across the country, and I founded an improv theatre in my hometown that's still thriving 13 years later. My greatest passion is collaborative creation, and now I'm bringing that expertise to the virtual tabletop to build unforgettable adventures. My style is a fiction-forward style, with a preference for PtbA and rules-medium games with dice and complications. I've played TTRPGs on and off for 25 years, and I've GM'd for everything from D&D and Pathfinder to super crunchy Lancer, and then over to WOD Mage : The Ascension, and PtbA - Monster of the Week, Blades in the Dark, and lately Daggerheart, which is a little of everything. I have a strong preference for homemade adventures, but I do draw inspiration from modules and paid content. My Table Is Ideal for You If.... You're a creative storyteller with a dream campaign you want to see brought to life. You're a brand-new player looking for a supportive, welcoming first experience. You're a D&D/Pathfinder veteran craving a more narrative-focused and cinematic game. You believe the "Rule of Cool" is the most important rule of all. You want to have an experience of an epic journey, whether the scale is one town, one country, or a whole universe.

I got started GMing...

We got snowed in one weekend and we doodled a map. Then we added some colors and started writing names on it. 3 days later we had built a whole world one detail at a time. Even though I barely knew the rules, the players loved the game - soldiers questioning war, cinematic combat! I was hooked.

How ImprovBuck runs games

My service isn't just about running a game; it's a collaborative creation process. My plan is to start with a detailed conversation where players bring ideas, characters, desired genre, and tone. It can be anything from a single compelling character concept to a world they've always dreamed of exploring. I Weave it Together: Using my 20 years of improv and storytelling experience, I will "Yes, and..." player concepts, providing the structure, the dynamic NPCs, and the thrilling plot to bring a vision to life in a cohesive and exciting campaign, designed exclusively for the players. I love cinematic moments, creating new worlds, from new vocabulary to new puzzles and weird adversaries. I love taking every fact the players give and weaving it into the world. I want the game to be awesome and for the players to be ranting about it to their friends. My goal is to keep players off their phones and glued to the table.

When it comes to voices

as the man said... ACTING! I love voices! Serious. Silly. Sideways! From the gutters to the aristocracy, from the tiny to the huge, I've loved storytelling since my mother taught me to read with a book of poems and silly songs. I've used my voice in radio, digital, and video!

ImprovBuck's ideal table

My Table Is Ideal for You If.... You're a creative storyteller with a dream campaign you want to see brought to life. You have tried other games but they didn't "get you there", or your ideas and backstory didn't seem to matter.

I love it when a player

Adds a super sweet detail - it doesn't have to a be an Pultizer Prize submission, it can be as simple as "Please pass the Moon-fish sauce" or "You can break in anywhere - IF - you know the codes." Reveals their character through play - "am I good or evil? I didn't blast him, I guess I'm... good?"
