About David

My name is David, and RPGs have changed my life. I'm sure most people reading this can relate to that statement in some way. I have been playing some form or another of a TTRPG for about five years, and most of that time has been spent as the GM.

I became a GM because

I love telling stories, and I love working with my friends to do so. I think when people come together to create something, the result ends up being greater than the sum of its parts. I hope to make that kind of magic happen here!

I got started GMing...

During the pandemic, like many people. I had wanted to try D&D for a few years, but I never felt like I had the time or the right group. But a lot of things changed in 2020.

When I'm not running games I'm...

Playing Yugioh, watching American football, or working at my job as a journalist.

How David runs games

I love running fantastical adventures that are equal parts goofy hijinks and epic battles. I have thrown players into dungeons with beholders who talked like Jerry Seinfeld, and I have also killed their characters' parents in front of their eyes on multiple occasions. I also love getting new players introduced to the hobby, and I want every game I run to be an inclusive space!

My favorite trope is...

Found family. It never misses.

Rules are...

Important, but not unbreakable. I allow players to be flexible with the rules, but not to the point of ridiculousness. As Brian Murphy once said, you can be Legolas - but not Buggs Bunny.

When it comes to voices

I try really hard to make them unique and memorable, even if they don't end up sounding that great. I think it's important for characters to have voices that set them apart and tell the players something about who they are.

David's ideal table

I love players who are curious and invested in the story and the world. I can't get enough of players asking questions, even when I don't know the answers. Players who roleplay even without prompting are also a huge plus. I also try to be inclusive at my table, so I would like players who follow that example.

I think metagaming...

Has a time and a place, as long as it's discussed openly at the table. You can't just transfer your knowledge to your character, but you can ask me questions about things you know, to try and determine if your character would also know them.

I think min/maxing...

Gets a bad rap. It's always more fun to play characters who are good at things. It only becomes an issue when it gets in the way of roleplaying, but even then, it can usually be solved with a discussion.
