About Charlie

Hi, I'm Charlie, also known as Buffy by my friends, and I've been playing TTRPGS since I was 10. My dad played DnD back in the 80s, first edition, which he taught to me and my sisters using a 5th edition playset (you can imagine the issues that caused, lol). Since then, I've gotten into more RPGs like Marvel Multiverse, Genesys System, PbtA, World of Darkness, and Essence20. I'm always down to learn new systems! I prefer to lead games through player-GM cooperation. I build the bones of the story by setting the tone of the game as well as basic themes and throughlines, and then players will bring the characters and roleplay that will make up the supporting meat, and which I will then flesh out to it's fullest potential. I am also a stickler for safety and fairness in my games. I've been on the receiving end of unprofessional GMs who did not care for the safety of their players as well as those who sat on their laurels while player conflict got out of hand. Conflict resolution is a skill I pride myself, and I promise that will not only my you comfortable on my end, I will also make sure players are treating each other right.

My favorite books are

Okay, so, not my "favorite" books per se, but I've been getting really into the old Star Wars Legends books. As I write this, I'm starting the beginning of the Yuuzhan Vong War.

My favorite shows/movies are

Buffy the Vampire Slayer! I've written college essays on it!

When I'm not running games I'm...

Studying for my degree in Psychology. I plan on becoming a therapist as a career.

How Charlie runs games

I prefer a roleplay-focused style, where combat is a more narrative experience that enhances the relationships and stories between characters and the world. Depending on the system, I may use maps, but I often prefer theater of the mind. This is so that players can have their cool moments in battle or hard-fought uphill battles without the minute details holding them back. Taking revenge on the BBEG for all they've done to you feels much better when you don't have to wait a full turn to deliver the final blow because you were once square of movement short, you know? I prefer to work together with players to tell the story they want to tell, and figuring out how to intertwine everyone's story together in a way that is satisfying for everyone. No "main characters", no "DMPCs", no "railroading". That's not to say I run sandbox experiences where all I do is react, per se. I like to build "one road of the highway", Where I have a set path planned out for a story, and the players can decide when and where they wanna diverge from that path. I do this so that players are given freedom of choice within the setting without leaving them to their own devices. More decisive players who wanna make the game their own are given the means to do so, while those who enjoy a more linear experience are free to engage with that instead (with of course, room to change their minds down the road for both types of players.)

listening to themed playlists, curated by myself of course.

My games focus on...

Narritive and characters. I want to tell epic tales of success, personal stories of growth, and tragic tales of heartbreak, not spend 2 hours fighting a door because the rules say the door has an absurd amount of hit points.

Rules are...

A good springboard to facilitate play, but not the be all end all of how to play a TTRPG

My table is not the place for...

power fantasies and/or domineering. Cooperative storytelling and making friends through that is my vibe with these games. I am not a fan of power fantasies (although I do understand those who enjoy them) and I am vehemently opposed to players trying to hog spotlight.
