About Matt

Hi, I’m Matt, a full time GM from Perth, Australia, who recently stepped away from retail management to focus on running tabletop RPGs and building great experiences for players. After years leading large teams in retail management and coaching high level women’s football, I decided to step away from the day job and focus on what I love most: building great experiences for people. For me, tabletop RPGs are at their best when the table feels collaborative, immersive, and player driven. I love games with strong roleplay, meaningful choices, exciting combat, and stories shaped by the players at the table. I enjoy creating worlds and situations for players to explore, but the best moments always come from the group reacting to challenges, building relationships, and creating memorable moments together. My games aim to keep combat flowing and engaging rather than slowing down in rules discussions every few minutes. I follow the rules closely, but I also believe good ideas and exciting moments should matter. I use a few common sense homebrew rules to support the flow of the game and reward creativity. For example, if you critically hit a goblin with a longsword and there is damage left over, I’m happy for that momentum to carry into the next goblin standing beside them. I enjoy combat that feels dangerous, fast moving, and immersive without becoming bogged down in endless optimisation discussions or stopping every turn to debate positioning and technicalities. Players should feel encouraged to act, improvise, and stay involved in the moment. I especially enjoy: survival and exploration campaigns character focused roleplay fast moving combat meaningful player choices immersive party dynamics helping new players feel comfortable and involved Outside the game, I am accessible for character discussions, questions, downtime roleplay, and helping players settle into the campaign. I put a lot of care into preparation, pacing, and making sure each group feels different from the last. Whether you are new to D&D or an experienced player looking for a reliable table with strong roleplay and enjoyable combat, I want my games to feel like something players look forward to each week.

I became a GM because

we our last GM moved away and a few of still wanted to play I was sort of lured into. The group enjoyed it and it gave me confidence to keep going and here we are!

My favorite books are

from the Farseer trilogy by Robin Hobb, I love Fitz and the Fool and its my go to series with great characters and story telling. Any in the Drizzt series, it's why I love the Faerun setting and Jaraxle is my favourite character, just so many levels or whims!! Cant go past Harry Potter either!

My favorite shows/movies are

I like a lot of different things from crime dramas to fantasy fiction. My top three would be Slow Horses, Fallout and Ted Lasso.

How Matt runs games

My games focus on atmosphere, player choice, and consequences. I enjoy strong roleplay, but it is never forced. If you like speaking in character, you will always have space to do that. If you prefer describing actions and decisions, that works just as well. I run games where player decisions matter. The world reacts to what the party does, what they ignore, who they help, and the enemies they create along the way. I enjoy sandbox style campaigns with clear direction and meaningful choices rather than railroading players from one scene to the next. Combat is dangerous, fast moving, and story driven. I want players thinking about the situation in front of them rather than stopping the game every few minutes to debate technical positioning or search for the perfect optimal move. Creative ideas, teamwork, momentum, and quick decisions are encouraged. Retreat is a valid option, especially in survival focused campaigns. Not every fight is balanced, and sometimes surviving is the victory. I use skill challenges, environmental pressure, time sensitive decisions, and narrative consequences to keep the game moving and make the world feel alive without drowning the table in bookkeeping. Rules matter and provide structure, but I also believe tabletop RPGs should create memorable moments. I use a few common sense homebrew rules that support pacing, excitement, and creativity. If there is a fun or cinematic idea that fits the moment, I will usually give players the chance to try it. My goal is to create a table that feels immersive, fair, collaborative, and rewarding, where players feel comfortable contributing to the story and where sessions become something everyone looks forward to each week.

I deal with rules issues by...

Making a quick ruling to keep the game moving, then checking the details after the session if needed. I would rather keep players immersed in the moment than stop the game for a ten minute rules debate.

My games focus on...

Player driven stories, meaningful choices, strong roleplay, and fast moving combat. I enjoy games where the world reacts to the party and where clever ideas matter just as much as character builds or damage numbers.

Rules are...

Important for structure, but not more important than the flow of the game. I follow the rules closely, but I also believe great moments, creativity, and common sense should always have a place at the table. Rule of cool is everyone's friend!

Matt's ideal table

My table is collaborative, relaxed, and player focused. I enjoy groups that want to engage with the world, support each other, and help create memorable moments together. You do not need to be a voice actor or experienced roleplayer to fit in. If you enjoy getting involved in the story, making decisions, and reacting to the world around you, you will fit right in. I welcome both new and experienced players. New players will always get support and guidance without pressure, while experienced players will have plenty of freedom to explore creative ideas and shape the direction of the campaign. The vibe at my table is immersive but approachable. Sessions can be tense, funny, dramatic, chaotic, or emotional depending on the moment, but the goal is always for everyone to feel comfortable contributing and enjoying the experience together. Combat is fast moving and meaningful. I prefer players who stay engaged, think creatively, and keep the game flowing rather than getting stuck in long optimisation discussions or rules arguments. Respect for the table and the other players matters a lot to me. Everyone should have space to contribute, enjoy their character, and feel included in the story. Most importantly, I want my games to feel like a group of people building something memorable together each week rather than just moving from combat encounter to combat encounter.

I love it when a player

Tries something creative, commits to a character decision, or surprises the table with an idea nobody saw coming. Some of the best moments in D&D happen when players stop worrying about the perfect move and just lean into the moment.

I think min/maxing...

Is fine in moderation. Strong characters can be great fun, but I care more about good teamwork, memorable moments, and players contributing to the story than building something designed to solve every problem with ease.
