About Rory
I am an easy going, open-minded, middle-aged guy with an overdeveloped imagination and I am not afraid to laugh at myself for it. This game feeds a part of my very core being. I played a bunch of D&D when I was a teenager in the 90s, then took about a 25ish year break and I've been back at it for a couple years now. My DM style is role-play encouraged and my strength is building and telling a story by enhancing vanilla modules with a extra flavor. I enjoy when players flex their agency and the improvisational gameplay that comes with it. Rule of cool, may (usually) apply. Outside of 5e, I stream old-school fantasy drawing on YouTube @MrAlligator, enjoy hiking at any chance I get, cooking and baking, and playing video games.

I became a GM because
I love the art and creativity of preparing for a session. There's a sort of zen quality to going through the campaign, making notes, light audio engineering, adding personalization, building a homebrew story hook, and customizing it to the player's characters.
The three words my players would use to describe me are...
Imaginative. Immersive. Story-teller.
When I'm not running games I'm...
Working my 9-5 career gig, streaming drawing, hiking, playing video games, cooking/baking, and enjoying all kinds of music.
How Rory runs games
I am largely story focused as I strive for cinematic style storytelling and immersion. I enjoy getting into the roleplay of NPCs, including some voice acting to the best of my abilities. I like to lead-in strong with custom written story-hooks that tailor fit to the player's characters and also add some "spice" to the vanilla campaigns to enhance the experience. Players with strong imaginations who keep me improvising on my toes are a challenge I'll gladly accept. Let's get weird with it! I'm sure I've got an ability check or three here that will fit the scenerio. I create combat scenarios where I consider environment layout, mechanics, and sometimes an unexpected twist. I wouldn't say I'm highly tactical, but I give it my all. I also enjoy hiding secrets and puzzles on my maps and encouraging unconventional exploration of said maps. I DM for Dungeons and Dragons 5e campaigns exclusively. I may branch out to some cozy systems for one-shots in the near future.

I deal with rules issues by...
Exploring the scenario the issue is taking place in. Does it completely break the campaign? I might rule against it if so, but I do it in a way that I can improvise a logical reason why in the game world something might not work. Otherwise, rule of cool is in effect.
I prep by
I like to tailor-fit a campaign to my players so I ask for backstories, goals, personality traits on the char sheets my players make. From there it's notes for customization during the campaign and story hook writing. Making or gathering handouts, and setting up maps and encounters on dndbeyond.
When it comes to voices
I'm going to give it my best shot. I'm not a professional voice actor by any stretch but I like to let the character's personality shine through and the voice sort of follows that.
Rory's ideal table
ABOVE ALL ELSE: We are all here for entertainment purposes and that should be FUN, immersive, and engaging. Players at my table should be respectful and considerate of others. Players who bring their imagination are most welcome. While I use handouts and VTT maps as visual aids, having a healthy "theater of the mind" will help you visualize and interact with the world I paint with words. Players who bring a bit of flavor to their character sheets are also most welcome. I'd like to know your character's motivations, backstory, and goals. At least 1 simple paragraph is all I ask. This really helps me tailor-fit elements to the group. Bring your most vivid voice-acting skills, or not, if that's not your jam. I lean on voice roleplay quite a lot as the DM and NPC characters but you don't have to. Humor is always welcome, but endless/repetitive memeing and shtick when it is disruptive and interrupts others is not cool. Watch the episode of SpongeBob titled "Ripped Pants" as a case study in what not to do. Players who help each other out are welcome. My sessions are typically geared towards newer players and I appreciate when a player explains where to find something on a char sheet or explains a spell in more simple terms to another player. But never take away someone's agency by telling them what they should do! If they want to drink that unmarked potion they found in a secret lab, let them do it! That's part of the fun of this whole TTRPG experience. Players leave all IRL politics or religious comments or discussions at the door. We all get it. It's spicy and very opinionated out there, but this is intended to be an oasis from all of (broadly gesturing) that. Rules lawyers may not love that I utilize rule of cool to advance the story. The story and adventure is my top priority for player fun and engagement. Min-maxers are ok by me so long as it doesn't completely break the campaign. I ask those types of players to work it into their character's persona. Like a feverish pursuit of perfection... Give me something I can use, again to tailor-fit the story. Players at my table will know to listen for my cues so they can begin their state of play when in sandbox areas. I will utilize the classics like "What would you like to do now?" and the improv standard "Yes, and..." when I am ready for the players to engage. All my sessions will be for adults... and let's face it, many adults swear. General rule, don't say anything worse than you might say if you have lightly stubbed your toe. An f--k bomb, or an "Oh S--t!" here or there is not a crime at my table.

I am for a vibe that's...
Immersed, engaged players having fun and getting into their roles.
I love it when a player
Really explores the limits of their agency. Make me improvise because you want to try something clever. Truly, I live for those moments.
My table is not the place for...
Comments or discussions about real-world religion or politics. The real world is spicy and we all know it, however we are meeting to go on adventures in a make-believe world. So let's all agree to keep the immersion and escapism there.
