About Scooter

Greetings, adventurers! I'm Scooter, and for the last 5 years I've been running casual 5e homebrew campaigns with friends and friends of friends. I'm a writer who's been pursuing arts education from a young age, and have a variety of playable settings in my back pocket. I've taken classes in plot, character, worldbuilding, and oral interpretation, and I love to work with my players to tell a collaborative story. My players know me for being able to create high stakes combat, intricate plotlines, sudden twists, and authentic NPCs. If you're looking for a well-built and potentially long-running online homebrew campaign, I'll be happy to guide you on your journey.

I got started GMing...

because my group's old DM was getting busy with work and decided it was time for one of our turns. I took a whack at it and quickly fell in love. I hadn't realized that tabletops would give me a platform to share my stories on a personal level, and ever since, I've been my group's dedicated DM.

When I'm not running games I'm...

writing, making music, exploring the wilderness, or working on my car. If you want any specifics, feel free to chat with me outside of character before and after sessions. I always love to get to know my players on a more personal level!

How Scooter runs games

In the past, I've always been able to shape my campaigns to the interests of the players. However, my particular strengths are in creating high stakes encounters, building immerse worlds, and crafting intricate plots involving the characters' backstories. I love creating games that tell a good story while also challenging the players in combat and keeping things interesting. I'm also very beginner-friendly. I've caught countless friends how to play, and have plenty of patience for first-timers or those used to other systems.

I deal with rules issues by...

rule of popular sovereignty. This means that for the large majority of issues, I'll allow an adjustment of the rules if most players would prefer it that way. However, if only one or two people want a rule to change, it will likely stay the same.

I once ran a session...

Where a character delivered a farewell monologue while sacrificing himself to save the rest of the party which brought a few of us to tears. Later, another player ripped a hole in a kraken using a whale shark in his honor. Good times.

My favorite trope is...

villain as more than a single foe, but as an entire movement, set of ideas, or force of nature. This allows for the "villain" to be an allegory in most cases. As a writer, my campaigns always poke at artistic truth, and a true obstacle being more than just an individual adds realism and depth.

Scooter's ideal table

The vibe at my table is always very casual and friendly. I have lots of patience for new players, and most of the time I try to keep conversation light and fun. However, in intense situations, I strive to get everybody holding their breath for the next moment and involved in roleplay. I work hard to develop atmosphere and build suspense, and my players know that the payoff is usually very engaging.

I am for a vibe that's...

Laid back while still engaging. At the end of the day, I want us to be sharing conversation and cracking jokes in and out of character. However, I also hope to be able to bring you to the edge of your seat and really get you excited for encounters/missions.

I love it when a player

really digs at a hole in the plot or detail in the setting. Everything is as it is for a reason, and digging at these small details can give way to great hooks. Also, when a player encourages/includes other players in their actions or includes teamwork in combat; makes for some of the best moments.

I think it's a red flag when players...

engage with the world, but do so while hogging the spotlight from other players or choosing not to include them. Everyone deserved their moment, but keep in mind the strengths of other characters and always try to promote teamwork. Why do alone what you can do better together?
