About Chaplain
I'm Chap, the Dungeon Master Dad. And yes, I am truly a dad and I love running adventures for players of all skill levels. My number one rule is: TTRPGs are a safe space. This is a place where you can be whoever you want and explore your imagination. There is no room for hate or discrimination at my table. I want my players to experience joy, freedom, laughter, and acceptance. As for my experience, I'm just starting out as a professional GM, but I've been running games for friends for more than three years. I'm most familiar with D&D 5e and 5e 2024, but I've also started to learn Daggerheart. My games are highly inspired by my love of fantasy, comics, science fiction, and Critical Role, as well as my time growing up in the 80s and 90s and my Filipino-American heritage. Having worked in book publishing and film, developing stories and rich characters is probably my deepest passion. And I love taking the characters and backstories my players create and working together to weave a fun, emotional, and thrilling tale. If all this seems cool with you then let's play.

I got started GMing...
. . . because I wanted to run a game for my family that I didn't get to see very often. My cousins live hours from me, and I wanted a way for us to hang and have fun, so I started a campaign for them online. I fell in love with it, and now I want to share that joy with others.
My favorite shows/movies are
The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Sinners, The Office (American version), anything Critical Role, Star Trek (DS9 is my personal favorite), and I'm a big fan of 80s/90s era cartoons.
When I'm not running games I'm...
. . . being a dad to my two amazing kids! I love to play board games, video games, watch shows and just chill out with my wonderful wife, and just recently got into building Legos together. I'm a big geek that loves gaming, comics, books, and writing.
How Chaplain runs games
I'm a pretty chill GM, who believes a good story trumps everything else. As a person of color and an ally to the LGBTQ+ community, I strive to make my table inclusive and safe for everyone. I do like to follow the rules, but I also love when players can think outside the box. I guess I walk the line of RAW, but lean toward Rule of Cool. I like to make my own worlds, as I prefer to weave in elements from my heritage, pop culture, and mythologies beyond the more common western fantasy tropes--but I love those, too! Roleplay is my favorite element of TTRPGs, but I also love crafting challenging combat scenarios that invite creativity beyond just standing and attacking. I use all the tools I can for an immersive experience with Roll20, Demiplane, and Discord, using tokens, maps, artwork, and music. I'm not the best at voices, but I try. I believe that session zeroes and safety tools build a strong foundation for campaigns, and regular check-ins and gold stars are helpful tools, as well. Ultimately, I'm here to facilitate my player's stories to help bring them to life, and I try to make that as fun and easy as possible.

My games focus on...
. . . balance. I try to keep a good balance between story, combat, role play, and pacing. Most importantly, I try to find balance between the narrative of the game with the personal arcs of my PCs. We're telling a story together, and I try to make sure everyone gets a chance to shine.
Rules are...
. . . essential, but they aren't written in stone. I love using rules as a foundation, but I also love when players think outside the box, because I do, too. So I try to walk the line of RAW but definitely lean towards Rule of Cool. I try to Yes And, but do Yes But, and No But when needed.
When it comes to voices
I try. Am I good or bad, I'll leave that up to my players to decide. But I'm here to have fun and speaking in random accents and weird voices is fun, whether they're good or not, in my humble opinion.
Chaplain's ideal table
I'm big on collaboration, so I love it when my players share ideas and want to world build with me. Essentially I want people to allow themselves to get lost at my table, free themselves from the worries of the real world, and escape for a few hours.

I love it when a player
has goals for their character. This can be as simple as, finding a cool sword, or as complicated as finding the person who murdered their parents. But I love it when players have a sense of what they want their characters to achieve. And I can then work that into the campaign.
I think min/maxing...
. . . is fine as long as it doesn't deter the spotlight from other players. If a player wants to min/max their PC within the confines of the rules of player creation, go right ahead. I can still make combat and social interactions challenging and fun. Just don't take the fun from other players.
My table is not the place for...
. . . discrimination or gatekeeping. TTRPGs are for everyone. I can't say this enough. I am an ally to LGBTQ+. I am a person of color. I like running games that allow for all types of people to explore, adventure, and discover new worlds.
