About The 3rd Gen GM
Hello, one and all! My name is Connor, and I've been a GM since 2018, but with experience in TTRPGs going all the way back to 2007. RPGs have been a tradition in my family since the early 80s, stretching across 3 whole generations. I've picked up the torch as a third generation GM, ready to bring more than 40 years of shared experience and knowledge to the table. I'm a lover of a good mystery, and I enjoy incorporating aspects of investigative gameplay even in stories not primarily about solving a mystery. If a story makes you stop and think "now what could that possibly mean?" then there's a strong chance that I'll be all over it. If you're looking for games that will challenge your characters, while presenting twists and turns for them to work through as intriguing stories unfold due to their actions, then I'd love to run a game for you!

I became a GM because
It's a family tradition that I'm eager to continue. My grandfather began running AD&D 2e in the 80s for my dad, who then ran games for his friends with AD&D 2e and VtM in the 90s. I picked up the tradition in 2018 with friends from work, who I still run casual games for today.
My 3 systems I'd bring to a desert island would be
Vampire: The Masquerade (Any edition) - For that sweet, sweet, edge! D&D 5e2014 - Easily my most proficient system. Thousands of hours playing, and still so many more stories to explore, Call of Cthulhu 7th edition - The gold standard for horror and mystery games. A personal favorite.
When I'm not running games I'm...
Brewing some new Magic: The Gathering deck to play against my friends. If not, I'll be either spending time with my wonderful wife, or obsessing over whichever video game has captured my attention for that week or month.
How The 3rd Gen GM runs games
What you can expect from my games: 📖 Involved narratives that unfold based on your choices in-game. 🎭 Engaging roleplay with characters who react to your behavior and decisions. ⚔️ Fine-tuned and exciting combat, because who doesn't love a brush with death every now and again? 🛡️ A safe and inclusive space to immerse yourself in the game world. Everyone at the table is welcomed and valued What sets my table apart from others; 🔍 A focus on mystery and investigation. If you're a player who loves picking at a conundrum with well-kept notes, then you'll thrive at my table. 💬 Layered and thought-out relationships between NPCs, organizations, and your characters. Lifting one stone lowers another, and pursuing one opportunity often closes off others. What you can expect from me; 🙌 A GM who actively roots for your character to succeed, and is invested in the story they're forging. 🧑🏫 Guidance and patience for players new to a game system, ensuring a welcome and inviting place to learn. 📣 Open and clear communication for anything you need to make your experience at the table as enjoyable as possible.

I deal with rules issues by...
Quickly reviewing the available rules of an ability or situation, and making a judgement call based on my reasoning. In cases of doubt, I err on the side of the players, and look up the ruling after the game.
Rules are...
A baseline that helps all players understand how the game works. But they're also an imperfect representation of the world that the narrative takes place in. Sometimes we gotta bend stuff to make the character's actions and the narrative flow smoothly.
When it comes to voices
I am fully unashamed, and willing to sound completely silly to throw myself into a character's portrayal.

I am for a vibe that's...
Intriguing and suspenseful. If you have to pause at some point and think; "Wait THAT was the significance of that other thing?!" then I know I've set the vibe just right.
I love it when a player
Loves their character, and takes their story seriously. Knowing that a player is invested enough in the story we're crafting together to take their own participation seriously is the absolute greatest feeling to me as a GM.
I think metagaming...
Is perfectly fine! People in real life learned what the 'meta' of the real world was, and went off to become massively successful. Your character lives in the world of the game, so it's reasonable to think they know how to be effective with their skills and equipment.
