About GM Joe

I love playing games that create interesting stories. For me, the collaborative storytelling happening is the main reason we play, and while I do my absolute best to be up-to-snuff on the rules of any game system I run, I will always favor a wonderful storytelling moment over a strict interpretation of the rules. I believe the best stories are ones where the players get to make meaningful and hard choices. Player agency is first and foremost in my games, and I love to play games where choices are dynamic to the situation, making each decision something to really think about but not agonize over. It’s also important to me to clarify, I love good wholesome and campy heroic tales as well! Like typical in D&D adventures, where the villains are unambiguously evil and the heroes are likely to come out on top. I tend to spice these up by adding cleverly woven backstory elements from each character into the adventure, making it both more personal and higher stakes. During the game, I love, and take time, to describe things in vivid detail, while pointedly noting anything important to players. If a player doesn’t understand something in my description, I’ll happily take a quick second to compare it to something in Movies or TV or video games to hopefully bridge that gap. Lastly, I pride myself on keeping plots and quests easily digestible. I don’t expect players to all take careful notes, so I form my games and stories around this to make them engaging without being so tangled and overly complicated that it becomes hard to follow what is going on and why. I want everyone to come to the table excited to play, without needing to take “homework” back with them when the session is over. If you're excited about being in-character, enjoy doing a silly voice or accent, look for ways to have dramatic or heartfelt scenes with other PCs, and possibly watch a lot of D&D actual-plays, I think you and I will get along just fine!

I became a GM because

I really liked doing a bunch of voices! I have way too much fun making my own sound effects and doing accents (whether they're good or not) to make memorable characters.

I got started GMing...

I started with online text RP on Gaia Online! 😂 Then a friend introduced me to DND 3.5E, where I was a player. Then I bought a copy of Call of Cthulhu 6E. That was my first ever GMed game, and I did NOT know the rules well, but boy did we have fun! 🐙 🦑

My favorite books are

I Am The Messenger by Markus Zusak (I haven't read this in over a decade, and I don't want to revisit it in case it doesn't hold up...) This Thing Between Us by Gus Moreno Words Of Radiance by Brandon Sanderson (but also screw the Mormon Church)

How GM Joe runs games

My philosophy is to help tell a compelling story. I'm in it for the cinematic beauty of shared storytelling, and I lean into character moments that bring that feeling to the front. Whether it is a moment of triumph or tragedy, I want to provide an experience you'll remember! I love the "RP" in "RPG" a lot. I have a lot of fun doing various accents and voices, and I encourage you to try them too! I lean into the idea of "episodes" and "scenes" in my games, to create a cinematic feel. There have been MANY sessions where rolling barely comes up due to players getting so invested in their characters that they create their own conflict, drama, and resolutions. If you love getting lost in a role, you will find yourself in great company in my games! ❤️ While I pride myself on learning the rules thoroughly, I am not afraid to eschew them. In fact, with most of my games, I tend to use rules more like suggestions, opting instead to give and take with players to create the drama regardless of what the rules explicitly outline. If a player has a creative idea or solution, I think that should be rewarded, even if there aren't explicit rules for it! I call this method "prison rules" because I find it funny. 😂 Don't be fooled though! Rules are there for a reason, and I do use them to facilitate the mood the system is trying to create.

My games focus on...

letting players make meaningful in-character choices. These choices impact the world and the story together, and give players a sense of satisfaction. You'll always have a good time and a great story if your decisions matter!

Rules are...

more like guidelines! Strong suggestions, but not absolute requirements.
