About Allan
Hi! I'm Allan! I love science, nature, camping and, of course, gaming. I grew up playing a lot of video games but also enjoyed board & card games and was always fascinated with RPGs which my older brother and his friends would play every weekend. A few years ago, I started to get back to playing more tabletop games and that spiraled into a new appreciation for RPGs. This has grown my love for world building, making characters, and collaborative storytelling that RPGs do so well. Over the past few years I've mostly run D&D5e for friends groups and also in the community with players of all ages at local libraries and city community centers. I've now played all sorts of different games and systems and I am always looking to try new things. StartPlaying has been a great avenue for sampling all the different RPGs that are out there and I'm excited to contribute to that on the GM side of things.

How Allan runs games
I love so many different aspects of RPGs. A fun moment between PCs and NPCs that leaves the group laughing (or groaning), a creative solution to a problem (and the inevitable failure of that solution), a unique combination of PC abilities that bring a new way to play or explore a game. All of that is amazing, but for me I think that above all else story is key and I love that these stories will be told by us: the players, the GM and the dice. I like a variety of games. I’ve enjoyed more tactical games like D&D where the players are powerful and have many tools at their disposal. It is fun to build a combat scenario for the players and watch them battle through a challenging wave of enemies or stages of a boss battle. But I also really love games where the players have limited tools, like Mothership, and the best option is to find a different solution rather than throwing punches. I’ve also grown fond of games that focus on just story telling and role playing. I’ve had fun sessions in games like Tales from the Loop and Golden Sky Stories where the goal is usually to uncover a mystery or explore a myth. I am not a rules lawyer. I do my best to follow the systems and allow the mechanics and dice to do their thing; however, I am always willing (and excited) to listen to a creative ideas and do my best to make it work within the system we're playing (or least set the player up with a roll/consequence for their choices).
