About Jeremy

I like to GM atmospheric, narratively-driven campaigns with lots of role-playing, investigation and suspense. I tend to be attracted to horror-themes, science fiction and/or post-apocalyptic scenarios with a big Lovecraft influence. In general, I'm a fan of theater of the mind although I use VTTs to roll dice, share character sheets, share art and handouts and now and then a battle map.

I became a GM because

I love and enjoy collaborative story-telling among friends, creating complex challenges for myself and others, and building interesting and sometimes slightly terrifying worlds and characters.

My favorite shows/movies are

Our Flag Means Death, the good seasons of American Horror Story, Firefly, The Haunting, Midsommar, The Witch Nosferatu, The Revanant, True Grit, The Exorcist

My favorite system of all Time is

I love the Cypher system. I appreciate its simplicity and flexibility and first and foremost the way it allows the DM to keep the story in the foreground at all times.

How Jeremy runs games

In general, I like to creating atmospheric and narratively-driven campaigns or arcs. Characters facing real challenges making meaningful decisions. Role-playing is king, but combat and investigation and other challenges help characters grow, so they are all part of the picture. Because atmosphere and story matters, not every character concept will work, but I will work with you until you find one that does. Also, I think my approach works best for players who are willing to hang in there with scary, moody or similar scenes. We all want to have fun, and comic relief has a big part to play, but scary and serious can be part of the fun. I have a few 3rd party D&D settings I'm familiar with: Ptolus, Diamond Throne, Ruins of Symbaroum, Nightfell.

If my games were Movies they'd be directed by...

Robert Eggers, with occasional cameos from Alfred Hitchcock.

I prep by

Doing a lot of story mapping, considering the characters and the NPCs and their agendas. Thinking through what the characters are going to encounter and trying to up my prop & art game.

My games focus on...

The story, the characters discovery and co-creation of it. Smart powerful enemies who aren't just waiting in a room to be killed.

Jeremy's ideal table

Collaborative story-tellers, people excited about their characters warts and all and ready to lean into (rather than away from) scary vibes.

I am for a vibe that's...

Suspenseful, sometimes scary, occasionally whimsical. People having a good time, working through mysteries, racing against the clock.

I love it when a player

does something wildly in character and it pays off. Or falls into a trap that gets everything moving forward.

I think it's a red flag when players...

Are trying to break the vibe, disrupt the story, not "yes-and"-ing each other.
