About DMChris

Hi, my name is Chris and I've been a Game Master for 7 years. I started playing Dungeons and Dragons 5e with help from a premade starter kit and i have been hooked as both a GM and (sometimes) a player. I eventually started writing and running my own campaigns. My experience with those taught me that multiverse and time traveling stories are probably better for a more experienced GM to be telling. More importantly I learned that the best sessions are the ones where everyone at the table is invested in the game. When decisions made by the players are informed by the characters they've made and have grown with them over the course of the story. Knowing the rules helps to, but the journey and the adventure will always bring out the best in your table.

How DMChris runs games

My GMing style thrives on role playing. Initially, I like taking time before the start of a campaign to get to know who each player's character is. In doing so I get to learn which players are more experienced than others. If a player does not have a character or does not know, then this is when I take the opportunity to help them get started on creating a new character. Whether that is achieved by planting some ideas of a backstory, asking the player who some of their favorite characters or favorite stories are, the goal is to get the creative ball rolling. I really enjoy how each player's decision making during a game helps influence how different situations turn out, making the session flow more naturally and creatively. Those situations could be as simple as the party's rouge jumping overboard their ship to prove a point, or as complicated as the fighter on top of a T-Rex pulling the rouge on a rope as he surfs through the muddy terrain in an attempt to climb up next to him. The player's decision making also makes coming up with different encounters easier because it helps feed each character's individual goals throughout the session or entire campaign. One example of how I enjoy making my GMing unique is by adding unexpected twists like an environmental hazard or structural collapses when it is least expected, giving all the players an assortment of opportunities to use their own unique abilities and practice quick thinking.

DMChris's ideal table

I've learned to lean into the more spontaneous nature of playing ttrpg's at the table. I understand that not everyone has the time to basically study a rule book for hours, so i encourage my players to chase the fun of endless possibilities in a game. I find that newer player's have an easier time when they're actually experiencing the game, and their choices aren't dictated by rules they're trying to follow too closely. At my table collaboration is the most important thing. A group that is invested and has shared goal of telling a great story with great characters is important for running game.
