I started running games because...
I wanted to bring me and my wife's friends together to laugh, weave beautiful stories, and slay monsters!
The three words my players would use to describe me are...
quick-witted, unexpected, & listening :)
When I'm not running games I'm...
exploring Saigon in search of the best bún thịt nướng, training for my next marathon or ultramarathon, or making small talk with my cats, Kyoshi and Asami
How Chantz runs games
I plan my sessions to bring something for everyone -- combat, investigation/exploration, skills challenges, roleplay, and lore. I create combat encounters that are narrative-focused and dynamic. No random encounters for the sake of combat or goblin bandits unless it drives some storyline forward! If it is a big battle, there are high stakes for your players! I love collaborative storytelling. I strive to create a world players both interact with and discover, as well as make their own.

I once ran a session...
centered around the party becoming trapped in our paladin's bean fart after EATING the Bag of Beans magic item. The fart trapped them inside a fart pyramid with several members stuck in sarcophaguses and a mummy lord attacking them.
I prep by
practicing my goblin voice (planning dynamic NPCs), calculating how many chromatic dragons I can throw at the party (crafting balanced, narrative-driven combat), and stuffing corpses with LOOT (ensuring every character's extrinsic and intrinsic motivations are folded into our game).
When it comes to voices
I will voice every NPC you encounter to bring those characters to life for you, but by no means does this create an expectation that you will also voice your character. I always encourage folks to roleplay to the greatest extent they are comfortable, however that looks :)
Chantz's ideal table
My table is light-hearted witty fun first with intense mystery and intrigue second. Players who fit well are those curious to dig into the details of the world and express themselves fully so I can match their energies and collaborate with their stories.

I love it when a player
thinks outside the box to solve a conflict, puzzle, or encounter in a funny manner that I didn't plan for!
I think min/maxing...
is awesome if it brings mechanics into the dynamic backstory of your character! Ultimately, I encourage all my players to make the character they love and enjoy playing, and I as the DM will figure out the rest.
My perfect party mix is
a mix of those taking notes of the party's equipment and those dropping half the party's gold on a talking sword. And a mix of experience level playing TTRPGs!
