About me

Hello hello! My name's Cameron and I would love the chance to be your DM. I'm pretty sure I've been obsessively making up worlds and stories in my head for as long as I've been sentient, so when I finally bit the bullet and got into DnD for the first time just over two years ago (after seeing clips of Dimension 20 on youtube of course), I was instantly hooked. I went to college for screenwriting, so I work almost exclusively with homebrew settings/campaigns. Most of my enjoyment in running games comes from crafting the world and the story collaboratively with my players, with everyone having the chance to get in the spotlight and really live out their fantasy dreams. I've run games in everything from whacky sci-fi settings to dark low-fantasy, so I have zero issues with matching the tone of my games to the players' preferences. After seeing ads for startplayinggnames pop up in my various social media feeds, I was immediately interested. I love my friends to death, but the idea of having the opportunity to form a group with players who will be as invested in their characters (and by extension the world) as I am was too tantalizing to ignore, so here I am taking my shot. I've introduced almost everyone who I've ever played with to the game, so I have tons of experience teaching new players, and I pride myself on having an extensive knowledge of the rules to answer any questions you may have. I'm a big believer in safety tools and effective session zero's, so I won't charge you for attending session zero and deciding that the game isn't going to be for you. I have an extensive library of books on DnDBeyond, and I have many hours of experience running games through Discord to allow for easy communication, and of course musical accompaniment. What's a story without a score, right? I typically use Owlbear Rodeo for larger/more complicated encounters, but depending on group preference I've also run plenty of theater of the mind games. Anyways, whether you're picking up the hobby for the first time or you're an experienced player looking for a new DM, I'd be thrilled to be a part of your journey.

GM Style

I believe I keep a healthy balance between combat, roleplay, and other mechanics like skill-challenges and exploration. It's very rare for me to finish a session without a combat encounter, but my top priority is always story and character. I almost never use things like completely random encounters that are only there to burn resources, for example. I am by no means a professional voice actor, but I spend a ton of time imagining unique speech and personality for all of my NPCs. I'm a big believer in player creativity, but I have absolutely played in games where there is no consistency in the rules of the world, which I think actually hurts the players' ability to make informed choices. At the end of the day, we are all here to play an agreed-upon game, so I do my best to make sure that bending the rules of the game feels satisfying, fair, and earned by the character in question.
