About Caligula

I got started when I joined a friend's new group, and we ended up doing rotating GM duty, each taking turns running one-shots or short 3-5 session arcs. My first character was a monk I named Komencanto (Esperanto for "beginner," because I thought I was clever), and the first thing I ever ran was a 3-session game about an island full of experimented-on beasties, bullywugs and the like, courtesy of a reclusive mage-scientist hiding out there. Since then I've run a mix of online/Discord games and home games, with a break or two along the way. A few years ago I dug that old island setting back up, expanded it into a full campaign world, and ran it for a group of friends for about a year. These days I'm getting back into online games.

I started running games because...

I fell in love with the opportunity to bring my ideas to life for a group of friends or strangers and to collaborate on them together. It's like baking a big cake mostly on my own, but then getting a group together to decorate it, and then eat it together!

How Caligula runs games

I lean heavily toward roleplay. I want players in character, invested in each other, actually caring about the NPCs and the choices in front of them, not just waiting for the next fight. That said, I keep combat and consequences real: when things get dangerous, they're actually dangerous, and choices carry weight instead of resetting to zero next session. I'm not precious about it either. If a table wants something more casual and low-stakes, I'll happily run that too, and I love one-shots especially because I get to switch genres and tone completely from one session to the next, whether that's horror, heist, or straight-up comedy. I have a mystery one-shot I've just finished that I look forward to running, and I've been hard at work getting a campaign setting that's a mix of gothic horror and high concept drama finished. I love world-building, but recently I've been focusing more on building a foundation where players can put down roots and leaving room for more collaboration.
