I got started GMing...

when I moved to a new school and the friend group I fell into wanted to play, but no one wanted to GM. I naturally fell into the role and have since fallen in love with it.

People are always surprised when I tell them

My first long term campaign was played in Dungeons and Dragons 4th Edition and I was so young and not online, that I didn't know 4e was hated until about 2018.

When I'm not running games I'm...

listening to music (big fan of folk music), playing music (guitar and singing), watching movies (ask for my Letterboxd!), or writing. I am a storyteller through and through. Most of my waking hours are dedicated to thinking/working on storytelling.

How Beau runs games

Historically, I have been very dungeon crawl and combat focused. However, I am making an effort to be a more well rounded GM and am currently working on, and getting better with dialogue/roleplay. While we are playing a game, generally I would prefer to explore an interesting story over aimless goofing around, especially in a paid setting like the Start Playing platform.

I deal with rules issues by...

making a ruling in the moment for the sake of time. If it is going to take more than 30 seconds to find the specific ruling and argue your case as to why something should or should not happen, I am going to make a ruling in the moment and after the session, we can hash it out for future sessions.

My games focus on...

storytelling! Ultimately, I am running a game for your benefit. My goal is to make sure the party is having a good time, but for me to have a level of fulfillment, telling a coherent story within a session is extremely important.

Rules are...

important baselines and jumping off points to serve the story being told. You need to know and have an understanding of the rules, so you can then bend and break them, if the dice allow.

Beau's ideal table

Featured Prompts

If you're into ___, you're going to love my table

variety! I aim to bring a variety of tones into my table to allow players to choose how and when they would like to play. From cozy, lower stake adventures to exploring a seedy criminal network to hack-and-slash dungeon crawling, I have done it all!

I love it when a player

supports their fellow players' ideas. I can only do so much to help everyone enjoy their time playing. TTRPGs are collaborative and there needs to be inner party/group cooperation. Think of "Yes, and.." or "No, but..." from the improv world, we need to build one another up during a session.

I think min/maxing...

is a valid way to play the game that I am generally less interested in. I will not outright disallow someone from playing a min/maxx'd character, but there needs to be give and take in the character. Even Superman has a weakness.
