About Afonso
Hi! I'm Afonso, a Game Master who has been playing TTRPGs since around 2018. I'm a portuguese actor, director, writer and PhD student living in Lisbon, and also a full-out nerd who found in TTRPGs the same passion I had in drama: a way to, collectively, tell stories! I started out playing D&D 5e as a Master and, since then, things escalated to where I now work mostly as a professional GM in my hometown of Lisbon. I have my own TTRPG-related project called teatroàespada (translates rouhgly to Theatre by the Sword, but with a whole other meaning in portuguese!), and we do loads of Roleplaying related activities combined with theatre and drama! In teatroàespada, we've been working to create a larger and more active TTRPG community, so we offer a Club where people can come and join our sessions (currently running 2 continuous campaigns and around 2 one-shots every week!), but also Liveplays, Actual-Play series, Workshops... You name it! I Master regularly around 20 different TTRPG Systems plus a couple more one-pages, including D&D 5e and 2024, Avatar Legends, Daggerheart, Kids on Brooms and Mothership RPG, and I'm always searching for more systems to learn!

I got started GMing...
because I wanted to play, and no one around me was really doing it. I started around 8 years ago, with a great groups of friends who weren't that interested, never had the time, or simply And then they got invested, we ran a game for around 2 years, and I was hooked.
When I'm not running games I'm...
tired... mostly. Getting a PhD, Acting, Writing, Directing, GM'ing, i try to put a lot of myself into everything I do, leaving room for my awesome girlfriend, my dogs, and the TTRPG community I'm working to build in Portugal. So yeah, not even joking, I'm mostly tired, but very happy.
How Afonso runs games
As an actor and a writer, players can expect detailed scenes, theatre of the mind and a lot of Roleplay. I also prefer to give all my combats meaning and two to three different degrees of stakes, even if they're not world-ending or highly tactical. Most of all, I think I'm a good listener, and I want to help tell the stories that the table wants to tell. I have the most fun when all the table is in sync and is working together to create something, making it as beautiful, grim, sad, funny, quirky, or a mixture of all as people want!
