About Doug the DM
Greetings, adventurers! I’m Doug, your seasoned Dungeon Master, inviting you to join me at my virtual table for an unforgettable Dungeons & Dragons experience. I’ve been rolling dice and spinning tales since the 1980s, and my mission is simple: to draw you into a captivating, immersive game that keeps you coming back for more. Expect richly crafted NPCs, a chorus of voices and accents, intricate maps, a library of lore, and an infectious love for the game. As a lifelong devourer of fantasy fiction (and frustrated author), I’ve found D&D to be my ultimate creative playground. I delight in conjuring quirky characters, fearsome beasts, enigmatic prophecies, knotty mysteries, and breathtaking worlds. I thrive on weaving your character backstories into the campaign’s grand tapestry, letting you steer the story while I frame it within an epic narrative. So, grab a seat, and let’s craft a legendary tale together!

I became a GM because
I love interacting with people, incorporating different people's perspectives while telling a fun story, challenging players with interesting problems, and rolling dice. There's something magical about finishing a session and feeling the players excitement to find out what's going to happen next.
My favorite books are
Lord of the Rings, Wheel of Time, Mistborn, the Stormlight Archives, the Lightbringer Saga, Game of Thrones (will he ever finish?), the Kingkiller Chronicles (will he ever finish?). I also enjoy mystery, cosmic horror, and science fiction. As a DM I take inspiration from all of these sources.
When I'm not running games I'm...
writing legal briefs. I'm an attorney in real life. As a DM I bring those real world skills (organization, attention to detail, adjusting on the fly) to my games. I also bring my DM skills (storytelling, empathy, and inclusiveness) to my lawyering!
How Doug the DM runs games
As a Dungeon Master, I’m passionate about weaving gripping stories that evolve alongside your characters, pulling you into an immersive world. My games blend tactical combat—fought on detailed, interactive maps—with rich theater-of-the-mind moments and deep roleplay. I bring a cast of distinct voices and accents, bespoke campaign art, atmospheric music, and sound effects, all dedicated to delivering a top-tier experience. I lean into thrilling, challenging battles but equally savor the subtleties of intrigue. Social encounters, clever puzzles, and lore intricately tied to your characters’ journeys are where I shine, and I pour effort into making those elements sing. While I’m well-versed in the rules, I prize creativity and stellar roleplay over strict adherence—especially when it fuels the story. Whether you crave high fantasy, grimdark, horror, or swashbuckling adventure, I’ll tailor the tale to your tastes, fostering a welcoming, laid-back table where fun and friendship thrive.

I prep by
focusing on the story beats, monsters, treasure, and NPCs that interest my players. The characters aren't telling my story, I'm facilitating theirs by placing them into the world and then reacting to their decisions.
Rules are...
the foundation of the game and the starting point for making a ruling. They are not always the best way to handle a situation, however, and must bend at times to the Rule of Cool.
When it comes to voices
I have a variety of them! I enjoy doing voices, accents, and sound effects. I find these help immerse players into the world.
Doug the DM 's ideal table
Players will fit well at my table if they: Enjoy roleplaying and engaging with their character's backstory! Enjoy challenging combat scenarios that reward creativity! Enjoy delving into mysteries, legends, lore, and prophecy! Are kind, respectful, and welcoming!

I love it when a player
comes up with a creative or unique idea for solving a problem - whether it's an improvised weapon, creative use of a spell, or clever negotiation! I enjoy rewarding players for creative thinking and roleplay!
I think metagaming...
is mostly useless at my table. While my handcrafted adventures may be set in a familiar setting or use monsters you've heard of, I do not rely on published material, often giving my monsters resistances (and vulnerabilities). So metagame all you like, it may end up being your downfall!! (Mwahahahaa)
I think min/maxing...
is perfectly legitimate! If you want to power game, I'll give you opportunities to flex those muscles! But I hope you want to bring something else to the table too. Those epic damage rolls feel way better when there's some emotional weight to them!
