About the adventure

"The Thrill of Victory" is an original, high-level slug-fest for 5.5e that should be doable in about 4-5 hours (or less, if you're amazing). You, band of brave adventurers, have proven yourselves as heroes of not only the realm, but of the very world as you seek out lands in need of your assistance. Once again, you find yourselves with felled armies, decapitated generals, and allied kingdoms behind you as you enter the chamber of the evil scourge that threatens this continent. Gird your loins for the ultimate fight where everyone is counting upon you to taste the thrill of victory.

About me

I am a specialist of Japanese literature and games, which means I know how to make a good narrative and how to play a good game! I have 6 years experience with TTRPGs (5 as a GM) and have run one-shots, WestMarch campaigns, and even a personal weekly campaign for a group of my cousins. I did a lot of theater as a kid, which means for me, TTRPGs are a place for me to flex my acting muscles by bouncing things off the community around me. I've run classics from "Grammy's Apple Pie" to fully original one shots like my "The Thrill of Victory." I look forward to running a fun game for you and your tablemates.

Character creation

Creating your character

Character creation: any published species/classes, and homebrew can be run by me. Create a level 14 character with point buy or standard array. Equip yourself with any mundane armor and weapons you want. Also, equip yourself with magic items of the following rarity from any published source: 2 rare, 3 uncommon, 4 common. Team cohesion: as interested players are making their characters, think a bit of how they fit into the team. Not just for party balance, but personality-wise. This is a team that has been adventuring for a long time, so work out among yourselves what their dynamic is like as team members. Who leads, who does machines, who's cool but rude, who's a party dude? You'll want to be working like a well-oiled machine, not a group of strangers that met in a tavern.

The current party

This one-shot is doable with pretty much every type of party balance. Once you join the discord server, you'll be able to discuss with your tablemates what's best.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Discord will be used for voice during the session, and character sheets will be made on Dndbeyond. The VTT will be AboveVTT, which is a browser extension that works on most major browsers. It runs on top of Dndbeyond and uses your character sheets for the dice rolls. You should be able to find it with a simple search for the version that works with your browser.

What Kirby brings to the table

From my end, you can expect completely original maps, character voices, ambient music, and thorough descriptions of the action. This is not a "take 12 damage" type of game, this is a "the fangs slide across your breastplate until they find a soft spot under your armpit, where they dig in for 15 piercing damage" type of game. I have decades of experience with theater, narrative, and game design, so you can expect a fast-moving experience where every player will get a chance to showcase the best of their character.

Homebrew rules

For this one-shot, death saves will call for a memory from your character as their life flashes before their eyes. I prefer for characters to narrate what they're doing rather than what type of check they wish to make; the reward for doing so is that I might give you your choice between two rolls to determine success. For example, if you say "I wish to carefully remove the exploding seed pod from the plant," I may call for your choice of a DEX (nature) roll or an INT (nature) roll. An attempt to blend into a crowd may call for a CHA (stealth) roll, etc.

How Kirby creates a safe table

Before the session, players will be asked to submit anonymous lines and veils that will be added to a unique list for this group of one-shot players. At the start of the session, players will be asked for verbal confirmation that the list is adequate.
