About the adventure

This campaign will take place in the high desert, in the Ibaian Mountains, in the Viceroyalty of Irtza. There the Zelescian empire extracts vast amounts of silver from the land. One mountain in particular, Cerro Rico, has made the 3 noble mining families of Potosi incredibly wealthy. But at a cost; the common people live in poverty and squalor, while the elites live like kings, benefitting from their labor. While the government tries to prevent open revolt, all of this silver has begun attracting attention... This campaign will focus on the interplay of several desert factions, against the backdrop of a colonial, political powder keg. It will be an open table hex crawl, but with plenty of plot and dungeon delving, with a high potential for politics and/or intrigue. Open to players of all experience levels, beginner friendly.

About me

Howdy! I've been a GM for about six years now, playing weekly with my usual crew and introducing friends and family to the game using plenty of one-shots. This game has given me a great deal of joy and excitement over the years, and I'm hoping to pass that on to my players and continue to grow this wonderful hobby.

Character creation

Creating your character

Characters should be finalized before Session 1. Stats will be determined through point buy or standard array. Characters will begin at level 1. Character death is a possibility. Characters should ideally have a goal or two baked into their backstory. Goals should be fun and actionable and have sub-goals. Example: my Pa was killed by bandits, so my goal is to hunt down the leader of the bandits and avenge my father. I'll ask around town for bandit activity and follow the clues from there. Any content from 5e, 2014 or 2024, as long as it is official published material. Players should make sure their characters are at home in a desert, so water Genasi or Tritons are probably not the best idea.

What Ryan Jones brings to the table

I try to roleplay realistically, employing unique voices for special characters. I also like to employ a living, reactive world, where things might change over time depending on player choices. I enjoy tactical combat, the intensity of which usually depends on what kind of situation the players have found themselves in. Some places are more dangerous than others. When exploring the greater region, I also like to employ some survival mechanics and random encounters with a focus on faction interplay and environmental storytelling.

Homebrew rules

I use a variation of Gritty Realism healing, in which you have to spend as many days in town or a safe place as you spent adventuring or in nature in order to mark off a Long Rest (up to 5 days). You can take as many short rests as you want, within reason. I will also be using a 'pieces of 8' monetary system, in which 1 silver coin equals approximately 1 real-world dollar. One copper (mostly trivial) is equal to one piece of 8, or 1/8 of a silver coin, and there are 4 silver dollars in a gold doubloon. So 1 gold = 4 silver = 32 copper.

How Ryan Jones creates a safe table

I will send a link to my lines and veils document. Session 0 will cover expectations for play, character creation and answer questions about the world and setting. Aftercare will probably be a short stars and wishes conversation, with an effort to shift the vibe back to the mundane real-world.
