This campaign will take place in a high desert region and will focus on the interplay of several factions, against the backdrop of a colonial, political powder keg. It will be West Marches style, exploratory with plenty of dungeons, but also with opportunity for story, and a high potential for politics and/or intrigue and in-town hijinks. Open to players of all experience levels, beginner friendly.

Meet the Game Master
About me
Howdy! I've been a GM for about six years now, playing weekly with my usual crew and introducing friends and family to the game using plenty of one-shots. This game has given me a great deal of joy and excitement over the years, and I'm hoping to pass that on to my players and continue to grow this wonderful hobby.

Creating your character
Characters can be made at home or during Session 0 but should be finalized before Session 1. Stats will be determined through point buy or standard array. Characters will begin at level 1. Character death is a possibility, but the world is not overly dangerous. Backup characters are encouraged but not mandatory. The GM can provide guidance or make characters for those new to DnD. Players can fill out paper or digital character sheets using whatever trusted app or website they choose. We will be using the DnDBeyond VTT. Players can use any content from 5e, 2014 or 2024, as long as it is official published material. Players should make sure their characters are at home in a mountainous desert setting. Backstory is optional; players will be SCRAP'pers, mercenaries employed by an organization known as the Supranatural Commodities and Relic Acquisition Program. Their job is simple; explore the high desert, find magical items and peculiar locations, report back to headquarters to sell the loot and information. Meet your quota and the rest of your time is yours. Just don't get into TOO much trouble...

What Ryan Jones brings to the table
I try to roleplay realistically, employing unique voices for special characters. I also like to employ a living, reactive world, where things might change over time depending on player choices. I enjoy tactical combat, the intensity of which usually depends on what kind of situation the players have found themselves in; some places are more dangerous than others. When exploring the greater region, I also like to employ some survival mechanics and random encounters with a focus on faction interplay and environmental storytelling.
Homebrew rules
I use a variation of Gritty Realism healing, in which you have to spend as many days in town or a safe haven as you spent adventuring/exploring/in the wilderness in order to mark off a Long Rest (up to 5 days). You can take as many short rests as you want, within reason. I will also be using a 'pieces of 8' monetary system, in which 1 silver coin equals approximately 1 real-world dollar. One copper (mostly trivial) is equal to one piece of 8, or 1/8 of a silver coin, and there are 4 silver dollars in a gold doubloon. So 1 gold = 4 silver = 32 copper.

How Ryan Jones creates a safe table
We will collaborate on a lines and veils document during Session 0, using the consent checklist as a guideline. Session 0 will cover expectations for play, character creation and answer questions about the world and setting. Depending on how everyone is feeling we can have a short conversation, optionally including stars and wishes, and bring the vibe back down to the real world.
