About the adventure

Set in the homebrew realm of Thalla, this game will be a player-directed open-world sandbox adventure. The realm of Thalla is populated with a handful of towns - Phandalin, Saltmarsh, Orlane, Maerin, and others - each of which has work readily available for novice adventurers. What will you seek out on your journey? Wherever you go - it is up to you. We will start with level 1 characters who are novice adventurers and are meeting at the Stonehill Inn in Phandalin. Each character will start with at least one location they'd like to visit and explore, and you will find the residents of Phandalin have plenty of work available. As you venture to the other towns in the area, you'll find more and greater challenges to overcome. And of course, there is always a matter of that dragon flying about... No AI generated content will be used in the making or running of this game. The adventure does draw on content from many published adventures for 5e and other editions of D&D, as well as personal homebrew and whatever you all add to it! Players of all backgrounds, identities, and experience levels are welcome to this game. I will strive to make this a space for players of all races, ethnicities, genders, sexualities, and neurotypes will be welcome. Access needs and safety tools will be discussed in Session 0 and upon joining the campaign, and can be revisited at any time.

About me

I'm a long-time gamer and educator. My full-time job is as a math teacher for adult learners seeking to earn their high school equivalency, and I also do some education research on the side. I've been a Dungeon Master for a number of groups playing 5th Edition D&D since January 2021. Overall, I DM because I like to put pieces on the table and see what the players do with them - for better or worse! Character creation

Creating your character

During Session 0 (or, whenever you join, if you join late), we will roll-up characters using the "Matt Colville method." Start with rolling stats, 4d6 drop lowest, in the order they are listed on the character sheet: STR, DEX, CON, INT, WIS, CHA. After that, each player can select a species, class, and background, which can start during Session 0 but remain in flux and development until Session 1. **Session 0 will be free for all players, as will any dedicated character-creation sessions.** As you choose your character's background, you can consider whether you are from one of the main towns featured in this campaign, or from a more rural/remote area, or from a faraway land.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You will need accounts on Discord and DNDBeyond to be a full participant in this game.

What J brings to the table

I have prepared a map, populated with towns, NPCs, and dungeons from classic D&D adventures both old and new. It will be up to you how and whether you will tackle the various challenges placed in the world. I will work with you to integrate your character in the world and build storylines appropriate for each character into the game. In-game, I strive to have a balance between exploration, roleplay, and combat, although some sessions may be mainly one or the other. Combat encounters will be appropriately challenging - PC death is on the table, but usually only when you make a series of mistakes (or the dice are working against you). Each session will include at least one 10 - 15 minute break and ambient music from select Spotify playlists.

Safety

How J creates a safe table

In session 0 (and whenever a new player joins) we will discuss what triggers each player has and other content they would like to be warned about or to avoid. Due to the open-world, sandbox nature of the game, I cannot guarantee or cover every possible instance of potentially triggering content. In general, you can expect villains and antagonists (and sometimes even "good guys") to do bad things, but the most heinous of those things (torture and sexual violence) will only be referenced, never depicted/roleplayed/enacted. If the content of a particular session is making you uncomfortable, you should always feel free to ask for a break and discussion about what is happening. We will discuss all options for a possible solution and work to ensure that all players are still having a good time.
