About the adventure

Out of all the professions in the galaxy, from the Sol System to the Frontier, the Lancer is simultaneously the most lucrative and the most dangerous. Freelance pilots of powerful mechs, they are in high demand by corporations, colonies, and other organizations across the stars. They are heroes, icons, and legendary figures, romanticized by colonists everywhere. Except for you. You are Lancers, yes, but the glamor and fantasy associated with the profession has managed to escape you. You are the destitute, the lowly, the greenhorns of the galaxy. Convicts. Urchins. Indentured servants. Victims of the corporate machine, looking to clear your names and find a way for yourselves in the galaxy. For you, your stories start on a space station nestled deep in Frontier space, a hub for Lancers great and small. Welcome to the start of your stories. Welcome to the City of Canaan. ---///--- This beginner-friendly campaign is a West Marches-style sandbox. Events in certain quest arcs will affect the greater world, but it is largely open-ended as opposed to having a concrete narrative. As long as there are enough people to form a party, players are free to drop in and out as needed, allowing for different possible party composition between session. As is standard with West Marches games, scheduling will largely be reliant on the players. This is an unorthodox campaign, but I will be sure to ensure that each person gets a chance to play while keeping everyone engaged in the overarching narrative. I plan to take influences from the lore of the licensed Lancer universe but the narrative and campaign setting will be largely homebrewed. If you're looking for a good introduction to Lancer without the rigid commitment of a standard campaign, feel free to inquire further!

About me

Hi! I'm a long-time player of D&D 5e on both sides of the screen, but have recently begun branching out into other tabletop RPGs. I'm a voice actor, musician, writer, and all-around foolish dreamer looking to tell the greatest stories ever told. I became a GM because I believe that I was put on this planet to tell stories. It doesn't matter where those stories come from, I believe that every story deserves to be told, and with a little bit of help, I believe those stories can become the stuff of legends.

Character creation

Creating your character

Players will use the COMP/CON online companion app to create their characters. All licensed player content is free to use in the character creation process. I plan to hold free "Session 0"-adjacent meetings over Discord to assist players with making characters, talking about the lore of the setting and assisting with navigating COMP/CON.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You will need an account with Discord, Owlbear Rodeo, and COMP/CON. Downloading free player content to COMP/CON will require an account with itch.io, but all of these can be done for free. COMP/CON should come with all of the core player content already, but any of the content from narrative supplements such as "No Room For a Wallflower" need to be downloaded from itch.io. If necessary, I can assist with walking you through the process.

What Bryson (VP Breesone) brings to the table

I use character voices and ambient music during my sessions, and I also make lots of sound effects to provide further immersion. I use Owlbear Rodeo to make battlemaps and I also can make up custom tokens for player characters using Heroforge and Retrograde Minis. I try to add in a bit more narrative/roleplay-oriented gameplay to mesh with the mech combat. Obviously the combat is the primary focus of Lancer, so that is likely what the campaign will prioritize, but roleplay will still be prevalent.

Safety

How Bryson (VP Breesone) creates a safe table

I will send out a form with various content inclusions for everyone to fill out their Lines and Veils. During the character creation process, I will also briefly go over the content you may encounter. There are built-in safety tools in an Owlbear Rodeo module that I use, and I will also check in on everyone during the mid-session break and after each session ends. I will also do Stars and Wishes after the session.
