About the adventure

This adventure begins in the familiar and beloved setting of the frontier town of Phandalin, picking up right where many classic D&D stories start: with a simple bandit problem. However, this is no ordinary goblin threat. Soon, your party will uncover a dark secret beneath the town, leading you into a sprawling network of ancient caverns, forgotten temples, and the eerie, glowing threat of the Underdark. What begins as heroic fantasy gradually shifts into a terrifying story of survival against cosmic horror, as you race against a spreading mental corruption tied to a mysterious, shattered obelisk. This campaign is perfect for both new and experienced players. New players will appreciate the traditional, grounded start in Phandalin to learn D&D 5.5E's mechanics, while veterans will enjoy the terrifying, high-stakes evolution of the plot. This adventure will take characters from Level 1 all the way to Level 12, allowing you to experience significant growth. If you enjoy games that blend classic dungeon crawling with challenging new monsters, intense survival scenarios, and a strong sense of mystery, this is your adventure.

About me

I've been playing and GMing for roughly a year. Several of my friends enjoyed ttrpgs when I was growing up, but I never paid them much mind until covid lockdown began and I discovered Critical Role. After years of trying to get my current friend group to play, I finally got a group together, only for our GM to have to leave the group due to work scheduling, leaving me to take over. I have been running games almost every weekend since. I have ran games in D&D 5E(2014) and 5.5E(2024).

Character creation

Creating your character

Character creation will be done on DND Beyond using 5.5E(2024) rules. Characters will begin at level 1 and go from there. I have several books available to share. If you have a character idea, you can bring it into the game. Otherwise, we can build the party together during session zero, or if need be, I can provide you with pre-made characters if you would prefer.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

For this campaign, you'll need a DND Beyond account (don't worry, it's free), a Discord account for communication, and a device capable of accessing both your character sheet and the Maps VTT on DND Beyond.

What Matt aka Mathias brings to the table

I will provide several source books for character creation, ambient music to set the mood during the game, and a Rule of Cool playstyle that sticks mostly to the rules as written, but will bend them to allow cool stuff to happen when it's warranted. I'm not a voice actor, but I do try to make all my characters sound unique and/or distinct.

Homebrew rules

Drinking a health potion is a bonus action if you want to roll for it. You can drink it as an action to get the full healing possible from it.
