About the adventure

The King is dying, and the Elder Houses each plot their own ascent to the throne. Their dragons make them a force to be reckoned with, in spite of the restrictions set upon them by the Treaty, and no one dares stand against them for fear of winged retribution. To tip the balance of power and protect the people of your homeland, you must claim your own dragon and stand against the Elder Houses. Campaign for Levels 3 and up (no definite ending level), high fantasy, roleplay heavy, serious stakes, grand quest. War is coming. The Elder Houses plot in the shadows while performing sorrow for the King's waning health. According to the Treaty, an heir is already chosen, but the other Elder Houses desire their own heir on the throne, and have decided that now is the time. Except for the King, all are subject to the Elder Houses' rule. Dragons have been bonded to their bloodlines for centuries, each house with a different species, and that makes them powerful in a way no one outside the Elder Houses can match. But those bloodlines are not narrow. Family trees branch, and after centuries, there are even commoners who share a little bit of that ancient heritage. You are one such person. Whether you are a noble of a vassal house, a merchant, a soldier, or a commoner, your ancestors shared blood with a Drakanaari--- a dragon rider--- and that grants you something many will never have: a chance to claim a dragon of your own. The King's death will bring war. The Elder Houses do not care what it will cost to take the throne for themselves. Someone needs to protect everything they are willing to destroy. Will you answer the call, claim your heritage, and face a dragon's breath for the first real chance to stand against them? If you enjoy the bond between dragon and rider in The Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini, or how dragons alter the balance of power like in Game of Thrones, this game is for you!

About me

I've been a writer and creator my whole life, and I have found no greater joy than telling epic stories with people who really want to weave a tale and explore a world together. I'm a character-centric, fun-focused, improv-heavy GM who's run two ongoing long-form campaigns and many one-shots and short adventures over 6+ years, and introduced dozens of people to D&D 5e. I ~love~ teaching new people how to play, and watching them learn and really settle in is one of my favorite things!

Character creation

Creating your character

- This campaign starts at Level 3, and has no fixed ending level. - We will do character generation during the Session Zero; you can come with a few ideas to play with, or start character building during the session. - Character sheets can be form-fillable PDF, made on D&DBeyond or some other character builder, handwritten on printed out sheets, whatever method the player is most comfortable using, so long as they can send me digital copy of the sheet once completed, for reference (this digital copy can be a link, a scan, or even a photo). - Stats will be determined either by using 4D6-drop-the-lowest or my custom standard array, whichever the player is most comfortable with (both will be explained in Session Zero for those unfamiliar with either). - All official 5e content is allowed. Third party content for 5e (including classes, races, and spells) as well as homebrew options may be allowed, pending approval by the DM. - Players making characters with the 2014 5e rules should choose a starting Feat.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

- A steady internet connection - A Discord account, as we will do voice and video through Discord - A microphone - Webcams are not required, but are highly encouraged! - Access to a device with a browser for Owlbear Rodeo VTT. - Any third-party resources they used in character creation, for reference during the game, especially if I don't own that third party resource myself.

What Qylar brings to the table

Experience - I've been a GM for more than 8 years, and introduced many players to the game in that time, so I'm extremely comfortable guiding new players into the hobby. Custom Setting - a unique world, inspired by various media, cultures, mythologies, music, etc., (in this case, loosely inspired by The Inheritance Saga by Christopher Paolini and Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin, as well as other mythological sources). Discord server - where we'll play the sessions, communicate, and post character pics/maps/etc. Music - I have ambient audio tracks playing in the background during the game, to set the tone and mood. Maps - battlemaps from various sources, as well as custom world maps I draw myself. Google Drive - any player-relevant documents with lore information, calendars, etc. will be posted here (the link will be in Discord). Pre-generated character sheets - For anyone who doesn't want to make their own, especially players brand new to D&D 5e. (these are Level 1 and will need to be leveled up to 3 to start the campaign with) Character-driven – This entire story builds upon the actions and choices of the characters. Roleplay - I am a roleplay-leaning GM, and use NPCs (non-player-characters) to make the world live and breathe. Rule-of-Cool – Awesome moments generally win out over following guidelines. Investment - I most enjoy playing with players who are willing to care about the world, the NPCs, and most especially their fellow characters. For this low-magic setting in particular, being creative with how your class and race abilities express so they suit the theme will go a long way towards making the game more immersive for you and your fellow players! Leveling Up - I use Milestone Leveling, because it makes more sense for the way I run games. Also, less bookkeeping on both the DM and the players.

Homebrew rules

General and Setting Specific House Rules: General--- - Drinking a potion is a bonus action - Flanking (two characters on opposite sides of an enemy) grants advantage - You can spend your bonus action to make an extra attack, but you don’t add a modifier to the damage roll. - Every player starts each session with one Inspiration Point. They can be spent to reroll a D20 roll, given to a fellow player, traded in for an extra use of an ability or feature, or to turn a hit into a critical hit. - Shields can be used as a weapon to make an attack; it deals 1D4 + Strength modifier of bludgeoning damage. Setting Specific--- - Human is the only racial option, but you will be able to choose one racial ability from another race (excluding gith, giff, plasmoids, illithids, and thri-kreen) as a sort of mini-feat to flavor your character.

Safety

How Qylar creates a safe table

- This game is for +18, and includes themes and content that range from PG-13 to R rating. For example, violence, bodily harm, gore, and the like could range more R-rated, while romantic encounters will be PG-13 max. About the GM - I am a Rule-of-Cool GM. More often than not, if you pitch me an idea and can explain why it would work, I’m likely to ‘yes, and’ or ‘yes, but’! - Reflavoring or reskinning abilities/spells/features is welcome and encouraged. - I strive to build trust with my players, and to make my tables a safe space for people to play in. - I record the audio of my sessions, solely for my note-taking and reference use. This will be discussed in the Session Zero, and players are, of course, welcome to ask questions about it! House Rules These are listed in the character creation instructions, and will also be in a channel on the Discord for easy reference. Safety Tools - We'll have a 10-15 minute break about halfway through the session, when we reach a good pause point. Players are encouraged to take breaks or step away at any point if things get too stressful during game or they need a breather. - Stars have their own channel in the Discord, and are a great way to express what you enjoyed about the game! Wishes should be sent privately to me, either via direct message or your personal whisper channel. I'm also available through the Discord most days of the week, for debrief, questions, or discussion.
