About the adventure

The great skald Hendricks the High-Pitched has sung deep in the south of the faraway lands of the pious men and their great cities in the seas made of sand. He has sung to elven elders seven times his own age who remain amongst the vast forests that spread wide and far. He has sung to drunken dwarves in their lava filled forges. He has sung to kings and queens that dot the realm. And, he has sung to the powerful wielders of the arcane weave that have traversed the planes themselves. But that is just who. Now of the what. Hendricks the High-Pitched sings of the vast stone cities, sky reaching volcanoes and wide open plains. He sings of the fiords, the mountains, the marshes and the great forests that surround. Will he someday sing of you? Welcome adventurers to Skuld’s Weave. This is a west marches style game where you can explore the intensity of great cities of the north and the mystery of the lands that surround. This campaign will run weekly on Fridays at 10am Eastern Standard time (perfect for shift workers and those that don't work banker hours). I will try to design each 3-hour session to be opened and closed as a standalone adventure meaning you can join every session (100 total at least) or when you can. Each Friday the campaign will run with two to six players max to ensure the group is not too large, giving everyone a voice at the table. Your first session fee will be waived by the Gods themselves. If you are part of this campaign and attending regularly I will offer one free play-by-post each week between sessions. I look forward to meeting you. Kevin Northern Dungeon Master

About me

My name is Kevin. I am the host of Northern Dungeon Master. I enjoy running epic Dungeons & Dragons campaigns. When I run games I create or an amazing module, I unleash my strong, creative side and use my tools of ink and parchment infused with the magic of the weave to transport players from this world to the other planes of existence. Be it the burning Nine Hells, the place of chaotic soupy energy called Limbo or the stable but wondrous Prime. I played the game for the first time at 16 years old (34 years ago) and it was like discovering an unmapped part of my mind. I soon learned the art of dungeon mastering both in adventure creation and execution. I became a storyteller, a designer of worlds and a dungeon master who can be a frenzied orc one minute and a snooty elf noble, the next. As a writer and DM, I must anticipate the choices of players but, also know to adjust to choices that may drive the story in an unplanned direction. I like a good challenge. I revel in planning fantasy adventures, particularly ones where the lesser of all evils must be chosen. This, even if it may be cruel, or worse, tormenting to the party paladin. A good quest tests a character’s strength, dexterity, constitution, intelligence, wisdom and charisma. And finally, a good epic journey will ensure all players are vaulted to hero status. I am interested in learning more about your needs in terms of game. Let's meet in a session 0. I look forward to hearing from you! Kevin Northern Dungeon Master

Character creation

Creating your character

We will use D&D Beyond. 5e 2014 rule set and 5.5e 2024 rule set for character creation. Pick which one you prefer. While humans are a best choice in this home-brewed world, I am open to the various species choices with the right Norse themed backstory. We can discuss what you are looking to play. For characters, use point buy for stats. You’ll be level 1 (or if joining throughout the campaign you'll be the level of the party). Standard starting gear (or given gold amount to buy gear if higher level). Fixed hit points. Magic items dependent on level of party. I have many POGs available. Once I see your character built I’ll provide you with some options.

The current party

One fighter. One Rogue (NPC). Sept. 11 session kicks off at 9am (to 12pm). Sept. 18 session will return to a 10am start.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Bring your creative juices. Be ready to cooperate. Be open to dive deep into the world your character exists in. Engage actively with the story and your fellow adventurers to craft a memorable experience! You'll need a playing environment with no background noise, a stable internet connection, a D&D Beyond account and a Discord account. I will send a link from D&D Beyond for character creation. I will send a link for Discord and Owl Bear Rodeo.

What Kevin - Northern Dungeon Master brings to the table

Creative Storytelling means you can expect a rich, immersive narrative to set the mood and deepen the gaming experience. Tactical and Intense Combat means you'll need to be prepared for strategically challenging encounters. I aim to balance tactical depth with fast-paced action to keep combat exciting and engaging. I use custom maps and tokens. Visual aids like custom maps and tokens enrich your understanding of the environment and help track your adventures visually. I will be using a mapping software called Owl Bear Rodeo. All you need is a link to access our maps. Skuld's Weave is populated with dynamic NPCs, each crafted to add depth and intrigue to the story. Expect meaningful interactions that could turn the tide of your journey. D&D Beyond Integration. You'll have access to basic 2014 5e D&D sourcebooks. Character sheets and resources will be available and easily accessible to enhance our game sessions via D&D beyond. Expect a rich, immersive narrative to set the mood and deepen the gaming experience. I use the Rule of Cool. This means I embrace prioritizing fun and dramatic moments over strict adherence to rules. I may make a game time decision if I don't know the rule. If so, then I'll apply it throughout the game. I love teaching the game and welcome any new players!

Homebrew rules

Drinking a potion is a bonus action. One free sentence at any point in time during a combat round. Skill checks requiring words are free. Natural 20's will lead to a unique situation. So will natural 1's. I recommend the former but battles are often chaotic things. Hold onto your sword, get the magical incantation correct and hope your deity is watching.
