About the adventure

Step off the train and into the fog. Where The Ghostlight Stops is a story-driven, autumnal campaign set in Druskenvald, a shadow-drenched realm trapped in eternal twilight. Your journey begins aboard the Ghostlight Express, a spectral locomotive traveling the mists between worlds, until a catastrophic breakdown leaves you stranded in Wickermoor Hollow. In this isolated valley, the sun never fully rises, ancient hags bargain for secrets, and the paranoid locals lock their doors to appease a terrifying fae entity known as the Crooked Queen. To survive and find a way home, you must navigate a land where classic folklore isn't just superstition, but a living, breathing nightmare. This campaign blends the whimsical-yet-unsettling tone of Over the Garden Wall with the eerie atmospheric horror of Midsommar. Expect a game grounded in tactical combat, deep investigation, and rich character roleplay. Using The Crooked Moon ruleset, your backstories will be directly woven into the main plot, and you will encounter unique mechanics like dynamic multi-phase boss fights and double-edged occult curses that reshape your character's fate. Survival requires clever planning, atmospheric immersion, and working together when the fog closes in. This table is built for players who love dark fairytale aesthetics, spooky folklore, and mystery-heavy storytelling paired with high-stakes combat. It is ideal for those who want a collaborative environment where character choices deeply impact the world, or who are excited to try unique folk-horror options like playing a scarecrow Harvestborn or taking on eerie new subclasses. Whether you are a seasoned player looking for a fresh twist on standard fantasy or a roleplay enthusiast eager to dive into an immersive story, a seat on the train is waiting. The Ghostlight has stopped... will you survive what's waiting in the dark?

About me

👋 Hey everyone! I'm Hooli. I've been running Dungeons and Dragons and other TTRPG games for 6 years, focusing on creating immersive, character-driven stories where players have the freedom to really impact the world. 💻 Behind the screen, I love using digital tools to elevate our sessions. My games feature detailed maps, atmospheric music, VTT integrations, and full content sharing on D&D Beyond to make character creation and gameplay as smooth as possible. 🎭 My personal GM philosophy heavily favors the Rule of Cool over strict rules-lawyering. If you want to try something creative, wild, or epic, I'm almost always going to say "yes, let's roll for it." Whether we are running official modules or diving into a completely custom homebrew world, my priority is tailoring the campaign to what you want out of the game. 🌈 Most importantly, my table is an LGBTQIA+ friendly, safe, and inclusive space for all players. I want everyone to feel comfortable, have a blast, and leave the session with unforgettable stories.

Character creation

Creating your character

We will build your characters together during Session 0 to ensure everyone's backstory ties cleanly into the world using the Fateweaving system. Before our first session, you will just need to think about your character concept, as all character sheets will be built and maintained directly on D&D Beyond. We will start at Level 1, and stats will be generated together during Session 0 using standard array or point buy so the party remains balanced. To keep the aesthetic grounded in folk horror, character choices for species, subclasses, and backgrounds will be drawn exclusively from *The Crooked Moon* sourcebook. However, you are free to pull spells, feats, and equipment from any official 5e / 5.5e D&D books to customize your build.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

To get ready for our first session, please complete the following steps before Session 0: First, create a free account on D&D Beyond if you do not already have one, as this is where we will build and manage your character sheets. Second, set up a free Discord account and ensure you have the Discord app downloaded to your device, as this will be our primary hub for voice chat, campaign updates, and out-of-character chatter. Finally, make sure you have a reliable, working microphone tested and ready to go in Discord so we can communicate clearly during our games. Once you have these ready, you will receive an invite link to our campaign Discord server and D&D Beyond campaign slot.

What Hooli brings to the table

As your GM, I bring a deeply immersive and flexible approach to the table. I focus on creating a rich, sensory atmosphere using curated ambient music, custom maps, and evocative character and monster imagery to bring the fog-choked valley of Druskenvald to life. While *The Crooked Moon* features high-stakes, tactical combat with dynamic boss phases, my goal is always to keep the action fast, creative, and memorable. I lean heavily into the Rule of Cool—if you have a clever, cinematic, or thematic idea that isn't strictly covered in the rulebooks, I will almost always find a way to let you try it. I prioritize storytelling, player agency, and satisfying character moments over rigid adherence to Rules as Written. You can expect a supportive, collaborative environment where I provide all the visual and audio tools you need to get lost in the story, while you bring the creativity to push the narrative forward.

Safety

How Hooli creates a safe table

During our session zero, we will go over characters, house rules, table expectations, team building exercises, scheduling, and most importantly, our safety system. Our safety system is color-based and functions similarly to "X, N, & O." The colors represent different levels of comfort and consent: - Green means everything is good to go. - Yellow means proceed with caution or check-in. - Red means stop immediately and address the issue. I want to create a safe and inclusive space for everyone to enjoy the game, so please don't hesitate to use these colors if you need to communicate your comfort level during our sessions. I will also provide a checklist during our first session to ensure that we are all on the same page and have a clear understanding of the rules and expectations for the game.
