About the adventure

Your lessons in the arcane arts normally take place at the Librarium Arcana. After your master, High Wizard Zdavno, misses several lessons, you begin to fear something is wrong. A few days later, Zdravno's familiar appears, bringing a note from the master. It obliquely relays that he is unable to leave his home, a castle in the nearby wood, and you are his only hope of rescue. A wizard's home can be expected to contain multitudes of ancient and mystical objects and artifacts, and to use esoteric wards and illusions for protection. Fortunately, the apprentice's training includes a focus on the theory of arcana, and any apprentice fosters an understanding of magic and its applications. Exploration, experimentation, and puzzle solving are major elements of this mystery. In addition, there is time pressure: this rescue mission must not only succeed, but within a day and a half (in-game). Note-taking will be key to your success. Your player character is armed with a spellbook; you, the player, with your wits. Prior experience playing a spellcaster in D&D 5e is recommended.

About me

Hi folks, I'm Dwayne, aka Joorrekiin: a lifelong creative focusing on personal and business relationships through gaming. Currently I operate as a game master, editor, and educator who loves RPGs for both their collaborative elements and the ability of mechanics and random chance to inspire a world of imagination. People who play in games with me say my style is immersive, engaging, and centers the player experience. ABOUT ME: I got started creating stories in elementary school and refereed a year-long fantasy game during recess, then graduated to D&D in middle school. After stepping away from RPGs for a time, I returned to the hobby in 2019 - just in time for the pandemic boom in online play. My skills were shaped by hundreds of hours in VTTs and Discord. That's where several of my close adult friendships were forged. I use technology to enhance gameplay while also ensuring everyone feels welcome and engaged. Let's collaborate to make a memorable story together!

Character creation

Creating your character

This adventure is balanced to challenge a 2014 human wizard at level 3. The player character in this module MUST be a wizard who is proficient in the Arcana Skill. Please join my Campaign in D&D Beyond. We can make a character together during our free first session. You may choose either a 5e(2014) 3rd- or 4th-level wizard or 5.5e(2024) 3rd-level wizard for your character, subclass, and spells. For the best quality game experience, no monstrous species, setting books (other than Strixhaven), expanded universes, third-party books, or homebrew without prior consultation. 2014 subclass options: Player's Handbook– School of Abjuration, Conjuration, Divination, Enchantment, Evocation, Illusion, Necromancy, or Transmutation 2014 Ancestry: select from Half-Elf (Recommended), Half-Elf (Recommended), Elf (any), Gnome, Halfling, Half-Orc, Owlin (from the Strixhaven setting), or Tiefling 2024 subclass options: Players handbook– Abjurer, Diviner, Evoker, Illusionist Arcana Unleashed– Conjurer, Enchanter, Necromancer, Transmuter 2024 species options: Human (recommended), Aasimar, Elf, Gnome, Halfling, Tiefling

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Voice and video will take place on Discord, and Dice Rolls will be on D&D Beyond. Please join D&D Beyond (free tier or better): https://www.dndbeyond.com/campaigns/join/80232803739171934 Discord: upon approval, players receive a one-time-use join link to Dwayne's Font of Inspiration community on Discord. Bots have been a nuisance, so each new game requires a unique code. If we find that we need a virtual tabletop, I will quickly create a room using Owlbear Rodeo: https://owlbear.rodeo

What Joorrekiin (Dwayne) brings to the table

In Eldritch Castle, you will enjoy custom visuals by Maximilian Müller and a soundtrack by Kuu Sound and Esper the Bard. I will further enhance the scene using ambiance and sound effects from the Michael Ghelfi + dScryb sonic library, piped in through Discord so you can manage the volume. Should combat become unavoidable, it will be narrated in the Theater of the Mind, using D&D Beyond for rolls and HP tracking. Your enjoyment is my priority! My representation of the world will be fair, with rulings made on the spot that favor the narrative. I bring thousands of hours of experience to the table and still enjoy being surprised by my fellow players. Constraints and limitations are in place to urge creativity, and the challenges that confront the player characters are opportunities for your decisions to matter.

Homebrew rules

The Ichoros campaign setting has a grittier, more realistic style. - Long Rests: Taking a long rest does not provide a free recovery of all hp. You can spend hit dice and you still recover hit dice equal to half your level (rounded up) at the end of the rest. - Injuries and Exhaustion: Falling to 0 hit points causes a level of exhaustion, which represents an injury. 2014 characters will suffer 2014 exhaustion. 2024 characters use exhaustion rules (for each level of exhaustion, -2 to all d20 tests and reduced movement by 5 feet). Diseases, Poisons, and Curses: If you attempt to magically cure a disease or poison or remove a curse, you must succeed on a spellcasting ability check. On a failure, you are unable to cure the disease or poison or remove the curse. You can retry after a rest.

Safety

How Joorrekiin (Dwayne) creates a safe table

Sessions are "open door" meaning that anyone can take a break at any time for any reason by simply stating so. A five-minute break is planned near the middle of each session, with time to check in before resuming. I invite Stars and Wishes as a post-game wrap-up. Please be aware that Eldritch Castle includes themes of the occult, demons/devils, and zombies.
