About the adventure

This is an introduction to Dungeons and Dragons designed for total beginners. You will design your character on D&D Beyond, then learn to play whilst discovering a new realm of magic, mystery and mayhem! You worry about what you want your character to do and be, and I’ll worry about the mechanics and tell you what and how to roll those dice to make shenanigans happen! You will start the game being asked for help by a Druid to help investigate the Eldaron Woods - a magical, peaceful and healing place to be typically - only to discover that its magic has been stolen, and the land and the creatures who live there are being slowly killed… Will you be brave enough to plunge into the dark forest and restore magic and life to it all? Whimsical characters, beautiful backdrops and many surprises await - are you ready? This will be an easy-to-follow, newbie friendly crash course in Dungeons and Dragons 5e (2024 rules), taking your character from first to third level in ten sessions.

About me

Hello! I am Phoenix, a 40-year-old GM with many years of experience in teaching games and role play. I specialise in teaching beginners how to play, making people feel engaged, comfortable and supported during a session, and am especially welcoming to players who are queer, BIPOC, disabled, and/or neurodivergent (but this isn't a requirement - all are welcome!)

Character creation

Creating your character

You will make your characters on D&D Beyond, as it is a useful platform for beginners, before the game starts. You will start at Level 1. You will choose Standard Array for your stats. Use 2024 rules (not 2014).

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You will need to create accounts for the following if you don’t already have them: ❤️ D&D Beyond (for character creation and our Virtual Table Top) 🩷 Discord (for streaming voice/video call)

What Phoenix Rose brings to the table

I have a wealth of character voices to enrich the characters you will meet on your travels, background music for ambience, and combat that isn’t always straightforward but requires a little thinking and puzzling, too. For the most part I stick to the Rules as Written, but I’m not opposed to working the mechanics to your ends if what you want to do is cool enough 😜

Homebrew rules

Critical hits deal double damage Death saves - crit hits are instant death or instant resurrection

Safety

How Phoenix Rose creates a safe table

Consent and Boundaries forms will be made available to every player and any red or yellow lines must be given to DM before play to ensure everyone feels safe at the table, if something happens during play that you need to stop as it’s happening, hold up an X or make the symbol with your arms and we will immediately stop and re-address the situation. In our Session 0, we will introduce ourselves and our characters, go over the results of your completed Consents and Boundaries forms, talk over basic rules and introduce the dice and some of the lingo, then answer any questions that come up ahead of our first session. Every session will have a 10 minute break during a reasonable place to stop in the middle. At the end of every session, I allow 10-15 minutes for players to reflect on the session and give out stars and wishes (things they loved, things they’d like to see more of next time).
