About the adventure
'Once judged, ascended, then vanquished as one and as three.' -- Withers Bane, god of conquest and slavery. Bhaal, god of blood and torture. Myrkul, god of bones and decay and the fear of the end. The Dead Three. The dead gods of death. Yet a god does not die while his believers still speak his name, and death visits the realms every day -- Baldur's Gate more than most. It has become as the Three's second home, and their cults linger. You have each of you lost someone to death. Someone important. Someone the priests say the gods themselves cannot return to you. What will you do to get them back? What have you already done? What would you give to save a soul, and what if that soul was your own? A dungeon-centric campaign, meant to be fairly deadly but offering Ravenloft's dark bargains to keep character arcs going. This campaign will begin at level 3, then jump straight to level 7, and then jump forward again using milestone leveling from 10 to 20. In terms of story and module, it will be a mix of elements from Descent Into Avernus, Eve of Ruin, Baldur's Gate I-III, Mask of the Betrayer, and more. Rather than Vecna, the focus will be on the Dead Three attempting to engineer their return yet again, only to end in a civil war between their followers from across the planes.

About me
Longtime player and mod/DM of both tabletop and play-by-post games, looking to create a fun, social, character-centric table with a mix of official material and player-directed questing. I've been RPing for most of life at this point, starting with playing and modding on play-by-post forums, playing and GMing tabletop for about half of that time. I'm a big fan of Planescape (the AD&D setting and Torment), Dark Sun, Ravenloft, the World of Darkness, Gamma World, Dungeon World, Discworld, Super Mario World, Cowboy Bebop, Hellboy, and Sam and Max, and more recently I've gotten hooked on the adventures of the Mighty Nein -- to give you some idea of the flavour of game I'm likely to run. I love long-term subplots that take ages to pan out and tend not to be big on powergaming. If that sounds like a good fit, let me know. If I'm not running the game for you right now, maybe I will be in the future. Cheers!

Creating your character
Characters will begin at level 10! Before first session, I'll be running 2 free connected one-shots at levels 3 and 7 respectively which will lead into the ongoing campaign. We will discuss character concepts in Discord and go through character creation in DnD Beyond, where I'm happy to offer help to anyone who needs it. We will use point buy for stats, 2024 or custom backgrounds, and each character gains a bonus origin feat of their choice. Most first- or third-party material which you or I can share on Beyond is available, and I'll consider homebrew on a case-by-case basis. Reflavouring existing material is encouraged!
What to expect
Preparing for the session
We'll be playing by voice and text chat over Discord (https://discord.com). For your fellow players' sakes, please have a good quality mic and headset tested and installed -- I'm available for troubleshooting help if needed! Owlbear Rodeo (https://owlbear.rodeo) will be used for maps and exploration, and you'll need an account on DnD Beyond (https://dndbeyond.com) to create and update your character. As Discord links expire, I will provide them in group chat as new players arrive!
What Jay brings to the table
Expect a variety of character voices, a backing playlist, lots of roleplay opportunities, and combat scenarios where taking the enemy head-on is only one option out of many. My favourite campaigns always contain some sandbox elements and I love adding additional hooks and twists based on the player characters' choices and backgrounds!
Homebrew rules
- While flanking a creature, you gain advantage on your melee attack rolls against it. - 2014 rules for grappling, wild shape, and counterspell. - When hiding or moving stealthily, rather than rolling when you take the Hide action, you declare you're Hiding, and only roll when there's a chance you could be noticed, using other creatures' passive Perception as the DC. If there are undetected creatures when initiative is rolled, creatures which did not detect them gain the surprised condition and are incapacitated and cannot move until the end of their first turn. - Drinking a potion can be an Action or Bonus Action, but feeding it to another character is always an Action. When you drink a potion as an Action (yours or someone else's), you gain the maximum amount of healing (no roll needed).

How Jay creates a safe table
Please include any hard Lines or tricky Veils or triggers to me when joining, and always let me know if we need to break or talk out of or after session. This will be a dark game, but hopefully not overbearingly so.
