About the adventure

The Witchlight Carnival has returned. Beneath its lanterns, music, games, and impossible wonders, something is quietly wrong. Memories have gone missing. Promises have been broken. Strange creatures watch from the edges of the midway. And for some visitors, the Carnival is not just a place of wonder; it is the first step into the Feywild. This is a 4 to 6 session opening arc for The Wild Beyond the Witchlight, taking characters from Level 1 into the threshold of Hither. The story begins with a structured Session 0 and playable prologue before entering the Carnival itself, giving players time to introduce their characters, connect with the party, and establish what each of them may have lost. This campaign focuses on roleplay, exploration, mystery, and collaborative storytelling. Combat exists, but many encounters can be approached through creativity, negotiation, emotional intelligence, and clever problem-solving rather than brute force. The tone blends whimsical fantasy, fairy-tale danger, comedy, melancholy, and occasional darkness; like stepping into a storybook that does not always want to be kind. My style as a DM is cinematic, character-driven, and collaborative. I enjoy building worlds that react to player choices, with meaningful consequences, recurring NPCs, evolving relationships, and character moments that matter. New players are very welcome, and you do not need deep rules knowledge to enjoy this table. This game is ideal for players who enjoy immersive storytelling, strong party dynamics, mystery, strange NPCs, and character-driven fantasy. If you enjoy stories like Over the Garden Wall, Spirited Away, Labyrinth, Stardust, this table will likely feel like home. This arc is designed as a complete first adventure, with the option to continue into future story arcs if the group wants to keep playing.

About me

I’ve been running tabletop RPGs for years with a focus on collaborative storytelling, memorable characters, and worlds that react to player choices. I enjoy running a wide range of games and tones, from lighthearted adventures to tense mysteries, political intrigue, dangerous journeys, and character-driven stories. I run games for both new and experienced players and aim to create tables that are welcoming, communicative, and easy to settle into. I enjoy helping newer players learn the hobby while still giving experienced players plenty of room for creativity, strategy, and strong roleplay opportunities. Outside of TTRPGs, I work in creative production and project management, which strongly influences how I run games: organized sessions, clear communication, good pacing, and respect for everyone’s time at the table. For me, tabletop RPGs are at their best when the table creates memorable stories together

Character creation

Creating your character

Characters begin at **Level 1** and should be created before the first session whenever possible. This game uses the **2024 D&D ruleset** as the baseline. Character options from the 2024 Player’s Handbook are welcome. Options from *Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything* and *Xanathar’s Guide to Everything* may also be used where compatible. If you would like to use another official source, please check with me first. For ability scores, please use either **Standard Array** or **Point Buy**. Rolling for stats is not used for this campaign. Characters will be created and managed on **D&D Beyond**. A campaign link will be provided after you join so you can access shared resources and so I can review characters before play. If you are new to D&D or would like help building a character that fits the tone of the story, I am happy to discuss concepts, backstories, and mechanical choices over Discord before the game begins.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

1. Discord Account Voice chat and campaign communication will take place through Discord. A server invite will be provided after you join the game. A working microphone is recommended. 2. D&D Beyond Account Characters will be created and managed on D&D Beyond. A campaign link will be provided after you join so you can access shared resources and so I can review characters before play. 3. Beyond20 Browser Extension Recommended This game uses D&D Beyond for character sheets and Foundry VTT for the tabletop. I recommend installing the free Beyond20 browser extension before the first session so your rolls from D&D Beyond can appear directly in Foundry. This helps keep the game moving smoothly. If you need help setting it up, I can walk you through it before the game. If it does not work for your setup, we can still use Foundry’s dice roller or manual rolls. 4. Foundry VTT Access The game will be played using Foundry VTT through your web browser. No software purchase or installation is required. Prior experience is helpful but not necessary. New players are welcome, and guidance will be provided during onboarding and play. 5. Character Creation Please create your character before Session 1 whenever possible. If you would like help with character concepts, mechanics, or backstory ideas, I am happy to discuss them with you on Discord before the game begins. 6. Stable Internet and Browser A reliable internet connection and an up-to-date browser such as Chrome, Edge, or Firefox will help ensure a smoother experience.

What Stephen Leong brings to the table

I provide a cinematic, character-driven table with Foundry VTT maps, handouts, ambient music, visual aids, and guided onboarding for new players. Sessions will focus on roleplay, exploration, mystery, and meaningful choices, with combat used when it serves the story. Many encounters can be solved through negotiation, creativity, clever planning, or emotional insight. I run with a Rule of Cool, story-first approach. The rules give us a shared foundation, but I am open to fair rulings that support creative ideas, dramatic moments, and memorable character choices. I aim to be consistent and transparent so the table feels exciting without feeling random.

Homebrew rules

To keep the game moving and make combat feel impactful, I use a few light house rules: Potions: Drinking a potion yourself is a Bonus Action. Administering a potion to another creature remains an Action. Enhanced Critical Hits: When you score a critical hit, roll the damage dice twice and use the better result. Wounded Momentum: When a character is reduced to 0 hit points and later regains consciousness, they take a temporary -1 penalty to attack rolls, ability checks, and saving throws. This penalty lasts until they complete a short rest, long rest, or receive meaningful care during a recovery scene. This rule is meant to make going down feel significant without making early-level play overly punishing. These rules are intended to make combat more exciting while encouraging teamwork, resource management, and meaningful decision-making. Any additional rulings or house rules will be discussed with the group and applied consistently throughout the campaign.

Safety

How Stephen Leong creates a safe table

Player Safety & Comfort - Creating a safe and welcoming table is important to me. If something makes you uncomfortable, you have several ways to let me know: - Speak up during the game. If a scene, topic, or interaction is making you uncomfortable, we can pause immediately. - Send me a private Discord message during the game. If you'd rather not raise a concern publicly, feel free to message me directly. - Contact me outside of the game. If something comes up after a session or you'd prefer to discuss it privately, my DMs are always open. - If a concern is raised, we will pause, reflect, rectify, and move forward together. The goal is not to assign blame, but to ensure everyone at the table feels respected and able to enjoy the game. - Session 0 will include a discussion of expectations, boundaries, communication preferences, and any content concerns players may have. I want everyone to feel comfortable contributing to the story and confident that their concerns will be heard if they arise.
