About the adventure
Five hundred years ago, a legendary band of heroes fought back the chaos that once threatened Khalmaphros and founded an age of peace and progress. Now, statues of those champions stand in the courtyard of the Gleaming Bastion—an academy where future legends are trained. The world remembers them as paragons of virtue, their exploits passed down as myth, etched into the stones of the realms they helped build. But peace never lasts forever. Across Khalmaphros, the balance has begun to falter. Monsters grow more numerous, strange omens ripple through the Veil, and whole regions are awakening to forces long thought dormant. The Arcanum Throne has fallen silent. The gods, though still venerated, offer cryptic visions and strange silences. Something stirs in the depths of the world, and it demands attention. In the northwest, the Emerald Twilight grows ever darker. In the west, ancient ruins quake beneath forgotten cities. In the southeast, strange fires dance along the Embercloaks. The signs are everywhere—something is coming. And you? You are among the next generation of adventurers, scholars, and guardians. About me
Well met, adventurers! I'm Avner, and whether you're brand new to tabletop role-playing or continuing a long journey, I'm thrilled to share a table with you. I started DMing 10 years ago when I got tired of waiting for someone else to run a D&D game and decided to learn how myself — and I've been immersed in the hobby ever since. In my three years on StartPlaying I've hosted over 300+ games and counting, and I've done my best to soak up every system I can get my hands on. My dice-rolling journey started with Warhammer Quest and HeroQuest, and these days I run and love 5e and the new 2024 D&D, Star Wars RPG, Pathfinder, Genesys, Cypher, World of Darkness, and many more. What ties them all together is the thing I care about most: players telling a shared story, with highs and lows that create memories lasting years. I've played in just about every format there is — dice around a kitchen table, across a camera, on Roll20 and Fantasy Grounds, and plenty of hard-fought play-by-post. If there's a way to play, I've probably tried it. What I bring to a table isn't just rules knowledge — it's a polished, immersive game with custom maps, atmospheric audio, written recaps so no one loses the thread, and a story we build together. Creating your character
You’ll create your hero using Dungeons and Dragons 2024 5th Edition focusing on narrative first characters. Whether you’re a bold warrior, cursed mage, reluctant hero, or something strange and wondrous, your story will matter. We’ll walk through character creation together during Session Zero. We'll also explore how your character fits into the world: How did your character end up at the Hero Academy? Where are they from, are they a wanderer from the wilderness of the Emerald Twilight or a member of they from the islands of the Drowned Choir? Are they a wandering heir of forgotten magic? Creativity is your limit.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
No prior experience needed! Characters can be created during a guided Session Zero or using provided tools. Sheets will be tracked in D&D Beyond. Expect narrative prompts and collaborative world hooks. You’ll need: A D&D Beyond account (for character sheets & resources) Discord (for voice chat & updates) Fantasy Grounds (For Maps and Encounters)

Homebrew rules
Soul Songs: Discoverable Mythic musical motifs that unlock bonuses during certain emotional or story conditions. They are your player's theme song and grant special Boons. Hero Dice: Using the hero dice mechanic we have a story point system that moves dice back and forth in a pool to add to Pivotal moments in the game and the cost of risk later. Living World: Your actions impact future games. NPCs change. Maps evolve. Artifacts are tracked across tables. Artifact Progression: Legendary weapons evolve with character choices. Shared NPCs & Timeline Events across groups.

How Avner creates a safe table
Your comfort is critical. We use: Lines and Veils discussions baseline setting at Session 0. The X/N/O card system during play. Open-door policy for breaks or off-topic support. Aftercare after sessions and group check-in before session starts. Stars and Wishes after sessions. A culture of respect, inclusivity, and enthusiastic consent for story developments. This is a space to tell bold stories—but always in a way that feels safe and supportive.
