About the adventure

Immerse yourself in a world quite similar to ours, a gothic cityscape where the veil between the world of magic and our own is thinning, fraying at the seams. Our party finds themselves at the forefront of containing the bleed between these two worlds, and protecting the world of the mundane from that which lies beyond. Candela Obscura is a largely narrative driven game, and this adventure tasks your party with uncovering the mysterious disappearance of a local artist. Explore the scenes, face the occult, and delve into a seedy underbelly of corruption, as the passion for power, wealth, and fame makes everyone a suspect. Drawing inspirations from works such as The X-Files, The Librarians, and Gothic Literature, assemble your Chapter of Candela Obscura, and work together to explore the unknown.

About me

Hey! My name's Jacob, and I've been a fan of tabletop games for almost two decades, initially playing many games of the Powered by the Apocalypse system, before returning to TTRPGs, and D&D specifically, during Covid. I've been a DM since, playing mainly Dungeons and Dragons, and dabbling in others like Daggerheart, Ten Candles, and Candela Obscura! I'm an actor and creative outside of this, and love the collaborative storytelling environment that TTRPG's provide, with everyone bringing their own personal take to every session, character, and story.

Character creation

Creating your character

Character creation will be done in the first session, our session 0. As this is primarily an introductory adventure, we will walk through everything and build our characters and Candela Obscura circle as a group. There is a player guide available online if any prior reading is desired, but it is not critical for this game.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

A Discord account is required as we run our voice chat and background music through their service. Candela Obscura itself is mainly going to be run as theatre of the mind, but a Quest Portal account is advised for help setting the scene.

What Jacob Stewart (DiceDropbear) brings to the table

As a GM, I'm a trained actor and, while I wish I was Matt Mercer level and will strive to be, I will always ensure each character is distinct. I also use ambient music through Discord to help set the scene. Personally, I believe the rules are helpful guidelines but not the end all be all, and I will always accept a reasonable Rule of Cool.

Homebrew rules

As Candela Obscura is a Narrative First style game, Rule of Cool and discussion will trump most Rules as Written.

Safety

How Jacob Stewart (DiceDropbear) creates a safe table

When you first sign up for this session, I'll send out a form for you to put any lines or veils you might have, which we can lay out anonymously at the session 0. In session, X cards can be either digital or physically manifested, whichever the player is most comfortable with. I'll also leave about 15 minutes minimum to chat and cooldown after the session, just to see where people are at and how they're feeling, as well as take any feedback on board.
