About the adventure

Oredin is a land that has found peace through newly formed alliances. Over 800 years ago the land was united into the Valkarian Empire. 70 years ago that Empire fell when Emperor Karstifar Valkarian III died without an heir. The succession war between the noble houses was brutal and lasted nearly 3 decades. In the end each noble family retreated to their own lands forming small city-states and secluded kingdoms throughout Oredin. A tenuous peace followed but came to an abrupt end in 1826 when a number of significant conflicts erupted around the continent. These events pushed those isolated kingdoms into a tenuous alliance known now as the Lochert Coalition. Once again peace reigns, or so it seems. The Elfhome of Umeris has been mostly secluded from all of this conflict. It lies in the southern bows of Avalia Wood. The elves there did not participate in the rebellion. They continued their quiet way of life as the world turned. Now, however, something stirs in the woods. The beasts have become more aggressive, Gnolls have been spotted roaming in the north, and something deep in the heart of the forest has begun to rumble... I play a very player driven campaign. The players in my games really set the tones and themes that arise. They take the various challenges set before them and choose a direction. My games are typically balanced in the three pillars but lean into roleplay. Though it is played in my homebrew setting the world is pliable to the players and open to their exploration. My job as the GM is to guide the story and the players so that there is direction and growth.

About me

I have been a DM/GM for 30 years. I started playing with West End Games Star Wars RPG when I was 14 and never looked back. Since then I have run long running, multi-year campaigns in several systems including: D6 Star Wars, 7th Sea 1st ed., and D&D 3.5e, 4e, 5e, and 5.5e. I would consider myself an improvisational DM. I operate from a standpoint that the fun is had at the table so I focus my efforts on maximizing the story that is dictated by the player's decision making. I utilize my knowledge of the setting, npc motivations, character backgrounds, and plot lines to determine how the world responds to the decisions the characters are making. My favorite moments as a DM/GM are those moments when a player has a real emotional response to something that happens in the stories we tell together.

Character creation

Creating your character

Character creation will happen at and/or after session 0. However, I provide 20 questions to ask yourself about your character prior to the character creation process. I will explain more in the preparation section. Characters will be created in foundry with ability scores rolled with the following guidelines: 4d6 drop the lowest. Anything lower than an 8 becomes an 8 and you must have at least two 15s. Characters will be created using the 2024 rules but if there is a 2014 subclass you wish to play I am open to that. Otherwise, I am open to any officially published classes and subclasses. There are some homebrew subclasses on my discord that will also be available to play.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

In order to play you will want to familiarize yourself with Foundry VTT but there is no reason to download, donate, or purchase Foundry in order to play. You will need to join my discord server. I will send you a private message that will have an invitation to join the server. There you will find information on the setting, maps, and my 20 questions for character creation. These questions help you and I understand your character before you start rolling dice or building out the character.

What Mark Rosania (DM The Mark Knight) brings to the table

I bring maps, lore, and monsters galore. No, honestly. I try to set the tone with maps and images that embody the party's exploration. I also have access to every officially printed material at my disposal for my players through Foundry. I try to provide some special effects and tactical combat but my games really thrive by being character driven and descriptive. My games thrive when everyone plays off of each other and the setting and I bring a seasoned hand at drawing people into their characters. I like to have a player help with taking notes as this frees me to focus on the game but provides a good point of reference for everyone at the table. I have a robust discord where those notes are stored as well as my games homebrew world and rules can be accessed. There are many players who have played in my campaigns available to bounce ideas off of and ask questions of. So I guess I bring a small community to the table as well.

Homebrew rules

These are the two homebrew rules: ( a ) Flanking - When you can draw a straight line between two allied combatants that crosses through an enemy both allies gain a +2 bonus to attack rolls. ( b ) Surrounding - When there are 4+ creatures flanking an enemy, they receive a +5 bonus to attack rolls against the surrounded creature.

Safety

How Mark Rosania (DM The Mark Knight) creates a safe table

I keep my players safe by having a frank discussion in session 0 where players can share their lines and vales. If they feel more comfortable sending me that information privately they may do so through a DM. I will explain thoroughly what Lines and Vales are and then proceed to note what each players hard lines and preferences are. My games are meant to be mature and that is both in theme and handling of those themes. At no time does my game entertain graphic displays but more allusions and references to more adult topics. I also have a segment after every game where players share their favorite moments. I believe this is an opportunity for catharsis and encouragement. It is a great way to end every session with everyone feeling good about the game.
