About the adventure

This game is perfect for new players who are unfamiliar with the game. BIPOC and LGBTQ players are also encouraged! I never use generative A.I., and I request the same from you. Welcome to Los Angeles! They call it the City of Angels... yet, in reality, the city is full of devils, vampires, boogeymen and more, hiding just out of sight. Every day, some innocent new would-be victims arrive in L.A., hoping to land their big break! But the glittering lights cast dark shadows, and some people get chewed up and spit out... or just vanish altogether. But that's where you come in. You're a hunter. You know the world is full of monsters, and none of them will never face any consequences... unless you step in and stop them. In this urban fantasy Monster of the Week campaign, you'll hunt down monsters from folklore and mythology, in a game heavily inspired by episodic TV shows like Buffy and Supernatural. Our game will be heavily cinematic and narrative-first. This campaign will also embrace adventures ripped from the headlines. Hollywood predators might be literal monsters, tech bros might hide demonic secrets, and the government ghouls might be inspired by the soulless politicians of the real world. This campaign is NOT escapist fantasy where we never talk about real-world problems... I prefer to turn our social anxieties into Draculas, put a stake in your hand, and offer you a cathartic experience. I am preparing a 13-episode "season", where each episode is structured around a new monster (though an "episode" might take more than one session to play out). There will be opportunities for a second season, but for now we are only committing to one season, to give players a chance to test out the game system and see if they want to continue playing past that point (for a "season two").

About me

I’m Mike Christensen, and I want to run your favorite game of D&D! I’ve been playing for 15 years and DMing for more than a decade. I've run published campaigns, completely homebrew campaigns built around the player characters, games based on movies or TV shows, one-shots, and everything in between! I want to create the game you want to play in! Do you want realism where life is cheap and death is behind every door? I've got you! Want a heroic fantasy game where you're the heroes in a story tailored to your backstories? I love those stories! Want to play through a specific published adventure? I want to do that, too, let's do that together! I especially love introducing games to new players, so if you are new to the hobby I would love to be your guide! I also have a D&D YouTube channel called “SupergeekMike” full of lessons for DMs and players, so if you want to know more about me, that's a great place to learn what I'm like :)

Character creation

Creating your character

We will create characters in our session zero, using the Monster of the Week Playbooks. You will have a chance to review the playbooks when you sign up for the game.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

We will meet over Discord. Please use a clear microphone, and wear headphones to avoid noise bleed/echoes. Webcams are encouraged, if possible. Character sheets will be provided via a form-fillable PDF, which can be downloaded to a local device and edited on Preview or Adobe Acrobat, or printed off and used as a physical sheet. You will add details to your sheet during each game, so please make sure you have a way to access it throughout the session. Players are encouraged to take notes, although you may instead choose to appoint one player as the dedicated note-taker.

What Mike Christensen (SupergeekMike) brings to the table

I am a very theatrical, cinematic Game Master, who uses voices, music, and visual aids to create an immersive experience! I will provide an Owlbear Rodeo page, which can be used to roll dice, and to share images and occasional maps (although most combat will be primarily theater-of-the-mind and not grid-based combat). I will also provide links for a WorldAnvil world, with articles about many of the NPCs, locations, and factions you might encounter through the campaign. These articles will be updated after each session.

Homebrew rules

Right now, my only homebrew rule is that I am not interested in players rolling against each other - so while the game system says you can "manipulate a fellow hunter," I generally think we should avoid PvP rolls whenever possible.

Safety

How Mike Christensen (SupergeekMike) creates a safe table

I will provide a Consent Checklist document prior to the campaign, which can be filled out to alert me of any topics they would like to be omitted and/or handled delicately in the campaign, including your Lines and Veils. Players are also encouraged to pause the game when they feel uncomfortable or uncertain. After each game, I will ask each player for their Stars and Wishes, to see what aspects of the session you are responding positively to, and what you would like to see from future episodes!
