About the adventure
Can you be the next Spider-Man or Iron Man? You’ll start at street level, but you never know where your heroic journey might lead. In this mini-campaign, you’ll create a brand-new superhero and join others to defend Chicago against a mysterious threat looming over heroes and civilians alike. You might be a mutant, tech hero, super soldier, or scrappy street vigilante — but whatever you choose, you’ll form a brand-new team to protect the innocent and face danger together. Expect: * Street-level superhero action * Team dynamics and character growth * Combat and heroic feats * Investigation and social encounters * Cinematic, rule-of-cool gameplay If the group clicks, this mini-campaign can expand into a longer story. We’ll explore secret identities, relationships, supporting cast, and the evolution of your powers and abilities over time. Join the Marvel Universe and become a hero! Can you be the next Spider-Man or Iron Man? Do you have what it takes to join the pantheon of Marvel heroes? Of course, you'll start at street level, but you never know where your adventures might take you! In this mini campaign, you'll become a new superhero who joins others of his kind to defend the city of Chicago against a mysterious threat that looms over heroes and civilians alike. You can be a mutant, a tech hero, a super soldier, or a scrappy street vigilante with no powers but your fighting skills... but whatever you choose, you'll come together as a fantastic, amazing, uncanny, incredible... well, you get the idea... a brand new superhero team to defend the innocent and protect the helpless. There'll be plenty of combat, but also opportunities for other kinds of heroic feats, as well as using technical, social, or investigative skills. If the group clicks together, we can work out extending this into a full-fledged campaign, where we'll have time to work in your character's secret identity, roleplay their relationships with the supporting cast and the other members of the team, and improve your skills and powers. Join the Marvel Universe!

About me
I specialize in cinematic, character-driven games, with nearly 30 years of experience as a player and GM. My other occupations include comic book writing, journalism, and hosting a pop culture podcast for over 20 years — these skills help me build memorable adventures, interesting NPCs, and immersive worlds. I love science fiction, superheroes, and rich worldbuilding, and I focus on collaborative storytelling where player choices shape the story. My tables welcome both new and experienced players, with an emphasis on fun, pacing, and meaningful character moments.

Creating your character
Before the campaign starts, I’ll help you create your character. A backstory is welcome to shape your hero, but you don’t need to be a writer — I’ll provide a short questionnaire to help you flesh things out. On the mechanics side, you’ll choose the origin of your powers, the abilities you want, and their level, along with your character’s training, knowledge, and secret identity. Powers are highly customizable. You can gain extra build points by taking limitations — for example, needing armor, an amulet, or a transformation to access your abilities instead of having them active all the time. Special weaknesses can also increase your available points. I also reward detailed backgrounds with additional skill points. I’ll even help you choose a superhero name and design your costume. We’ll work together to create a hero you’ll be excited to play.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
Discord is used for voice chat (cameras optional) and for sharing visual aids during the session. I’ll also provide a brief safety and consent form to complete beforehand, helping ensure a comfortable experience for everyone.
What MaGnUs brings to the table
With nearly 30 years of GM experience and decades of reading superhero comics, I aim to create an immersive experience inspired by the Marvel Universe — one where your character feels like they belong in a living comic book. This is an inclusive table welcoming long-time comic readers, movie and TV fans, and complete newcomers alike. The focus is on fun, collaboration, and making sure everyone has a place in the story. Your character will carve out their own role in the world, without being overshadowed by larger-than-life heroes. Famous characters may appear or team up with you occasionally, but your actions will shape the story and have real consequences. I run cinematic, theater-of-the-mind action and strongly value the rule of cool, giving you plenty of opportunities to attempt bold, creative superhero moments. My customized D6 superhero rules have been refined over 20 years of home campaigns, designed to support flexible powers, fast pacing, and character-driven storytelling.
Homebrew rules
I use a streamlined version of the D6 system designed to support fast, cinematic superhero action. The core rules remain intact, with small adjustments to improve pacing and clarity. The main tweaks affect how multiple actions work in combat, keeping scenes smooth and dynamic. I also use a “henchmen” system inspired by 7th Sea, allowing heroes to take down groups of goons before facing the real threats — the supervillains.

How MaGnUs creates a safe table
Player comfort and safety are important to me. Before the session, I’ll share the consent checklist developed by Monte Cook so everyone can indicate preferences and boundaries. I also use X/N/O cards during play, allowing players to quickly signal if they want to pause, adjust, or skip content.
