About the adventure
Hello and welcome to Rime of the Frostmaiden, an adventure in the frozen north for players new and experienced alike! For over two years, the Ten-Towns of Icewind Dale have been buried beneath the cold and dark of an unending winter. Sacrifices have been made. Food. Warmth. Lives. And yet Auril, goddess of winter, remains unmoved. In Rime of the Frost Maiden, your characters will release the Dale from its icy curse...or become its next sacrifice. This game will hew very closely to the story as published with significant challenges in all modes of play: social, exploration, and combat.

Hello there! I'm Nick. Let's make an unforgettable story.

Creating your character
I'll provide a link to a dndbeyond campaign with loads of content to share AND we'll roll for stats together (4d6, drop lowest, take any array rolled by any member of the party) in our session 0. Note that Rime of the Frostmaiden has built-in character secrets selected at random! If you dislike your secret, you can select another, but you won't want to build a backstory until you have drawn a secret in session 0! If you'd like to get started tinkering by using Standard Array as a placeholder until we roll, here are the other character creation guidelines: ⛄ Classes & Subclasses: any official or third-party subclasses available on dndbeyond that you or I have access to are fair game, have at it! For classes, we'll stick to the official 12 plus Artificer. Wizard, Warlock, Ranger, Druid, and Cleric are especially flavorful for this adventure! ⛄ Species: All 5.5e Core Rules species are good to go. For third-party stuff, just ask first. I'm less worried about the power level than I am about the tone and vibe. Human, Aasimar, Tiefling, Elf, Dwarf, and Goliath are especially encouraged for Rime! ⛄ Backgrounds: any official or third-party backgrounds available on dndbeyond that you or I have access to are good to go! Feel free to make a Custom Background and choose a fitting Origin feat to go with it. ⛄ Feats: any official or third-party on DDB is fine, AND everyone will get an extra Origin feat at level 1 (on top of the feat you get for your Background and on top of the feat a Human gets -- so Humans will start with three feats). ⛄ Spells: all official spells are good to go. For third-party stuff, go ahead and take what you like but if a spell starts to significantly overshadow the rest of the party or encroach big time on another player character's role, then I will (politely!) ask you to (please!) select something else. ⛄ Equipment: Starting equipment OR gold (and you can use the gold to "buy" your own equipment before we begin).
What to expect
Preparing for the session
You'll need a free Discord account and a free D&DBeyond account. That's it!

Homebrew rules
❄️ At Ranger level 5, Hunter's Mark no longer requires Concentration. At Ranger Level 13, Hunter's Mark is a Free Action to cast. ❄️ Monks, Rogues, and Barbarians get an extra General feat (from the 5.5e feats only, please) at Monk/Rogue/Barbarian level 6. ❄️ Death saves rolled in private. ❄️ We're using 2024 rules so potion guzzling is a bonus action by default!

How Dr. Nah creates a safe table
In session 0, I'll ask you to fill out a Consent in Gaming form to establish expectations and content limits. If we accidentally hit on something NOT covered in the Consent in Gaming form that you'd prefer not to appear in the game, please communicate ASA. This can be with the full group to establish new expectations, reflect on what occurred, and determine newxt steps (i.e., the Luxton Technique) or in a private message via Discord directly to me as you prefer. The content listed in Content Warnings is representative of what may conceivably come up as relevant in game, NOT what MUST appear in the adventure. While this game is 18+, that rating is for horror/violence elements alone. It includes no ERP and any romance (whether PC/PC or NPC/PC) will fade to black at the earliest possible opportunity. We will typically take two 10-minute breaks around the top of each hour (i.e., 1 hour of play, 10 minute break, 1 hour of play, 10 minute break, 30-40 minutes of play to conclude). Anyone is free to step away from any session or the adventure at any time without judgment or explanation! Though, of course, explanation is always welcome!
