About the adventure

Learn to play Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition by playing in the "Heroes of the Borderlands" starter set! In this curated sandbox experience, players will discover the Keep on the Borderlands: a proud if challenged fortress that represents order's foothold in a world where chaos threatens. By exploring the keep, the surrounding wilderness, and the rumored Caves of Chaos beyond the keep's influence, you will be taught the rules of Dungeons & Dragons by your friendly Dungeon Master (or DM; that's me!) and guided through in-game exploration, social interaction, and combat. Are you ready, Adventurer? Then roll for initiative!

About me

Hoi! 👋 I'm a multi-setting Player and Gamemaster with a great love of co-building dramatic arcs with the tables gracious enough to have me. Ever since I first began roleplaying in online forums as a kid, which naturally progressed into tabletop play, I have enjoyed roleplay as a way to not just tell meaningful stories with other players, but to also relate to the people around me. Get in, babes! We're roleplaying for social cohesion here! 🌈💖

Character creation

Creating your character

Using the D&D Beyond Basic Rules, players will build their characters together in their first session. At the table, we'll perform character creation in three (3) steps: 1. Choose your Class. Pick one of the classes from the D&D Beyond Basic Rules as your character’s Class (Fighter, Cleric, Wizard, or Rogue). 2. Choose your Origin. Pick one Background and one Species. Together, these form your character’s Origin. 3. Name Your Character. Choose a name for your character. The name can be whatever you like. When you’re ready, introduce your character to the other players and your DM.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

As part of the game's prep materials, every player will receive a link to a private Discord server dedicated to my games: we'll use voice chat for gameplay and text chat for chatter while "in the wings." To join the server, however, each player will need access to a free Discord account. Please be ready by preparing that ahead of time. For our virtual tabletop (VTT), we will leverage Wizards of the Coast's official D&D digital play platform, D&D Beyond, which will handle character sheets, rolls, and maps/visuals all in one. This requires a free account as well, so remember to sign up in advance if you don't have one already.

What Maggie Mae brings to the table

As DM, I will provide a playful introduction to the Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition system, so please expect a patient learning environment! I'll answer questions, give advice, and gently direct if any player gets lost or confused. Once players get more comfortable, I'll become more hands-off to allow for more curiosity and exploration, but players will always have access to help throughout the duration of the campaign.

Safety

How Maggie Mae creates a safe table

You are allowed at any moment to publicly or privately let me and/or the table know that you are getting up from the table, with or without explaining why. I will keep things rolling or call a break depending on your input. If you ever become uncomfortable for any reason, pulling an X or N card is not only allowed, it is highly encouraged! You do not need to explain why, but if you are willing to, I would be more than happy to hear how I could have better curated your experience during post-game debrief. X, N, & O cards will be digitally emulated through Discord text and voice chat, dependent on the player's moment-to-moment preference with publically or privately expressing their table needs.
