About the adventure

Welcome to the City of Splendors! In this campaign, you’ll explore the bustling streets, shadowy alleys, and powerful factions of Waterdeep in the classic urban adventure Waterdeep: Dragon Heist, run using the updated 2024 Dungeons & Dragons rules (often called 5.5e). This story blends mystery, intrigue, roleplay, and action as the party becomes entangled in a high-stakes race for a hidden fortune somewhere within the city. This game is designed to be a great starting point for a new group. Characters will grow from low-level adventurers into heroes with strong ties to the city and to one another. Along the way you’ll interact with memorable NPCs, join powerful factions, build a home base, and uncover secrets hidden beneath Waterdeep’s glittering surface. Once the adventure concludes, the story doesn’t have to end there. As a group, the table will decide which larger adventure to continue with, whether that means descending into the endless dungeon of Dungeon of the Mad Mage, venturing into the Nine Hells in Descent into Avernus, or braving the frozen north in Rime of the Frostmaiden. Come for the heist and stay for the epic campaign that follows. There will be a session zero to go through lines and veils, and give everyone a chance to build characters together. If we are all on the same page, it will be more of a session 0.5, and we will start

About me

I had the joy of being introduced to Dungeons & Dragons at age 14 while working my first job as an assistant in a comic bookstore. What was already a dream job for a young fanatic of nerd-dom became even better when a few of the other employees invited me to join their 2nd Edition campaign. I’ve been a fan of tabletop gaming ever since. Over the years, I’ve spent much of my time running long-term (longest being 6 years) campaigns for different groups of friends. While I have the most experience with Dungeons & Dragons, I’ve also had the pleasure of playing and running games in Pathfinder, Starfinder, Blades in the Dark, MASKS, Vampire: The Masquerade, and most recently Daggerheart. As a Game Master, my focus is on fostering a welcoming environment for collaborative gameplay and storytelling, led by the players and guided by the roll of the dice. I enjoy using the rules as written as a foundation while treating them as tools to help build the framework of an engaging adventure. With a strong understanding of different rules systems, I aim to guide players as they discover their preferred playstyle and help the group create a memorable shared experience. I’m excited about the opportunity to meet new players, no matter their experience level or background, and to start new adventures with people from all over the globe.

Character creation

Creating your character

Characters will be created on DnD Beyond. We will roll for stats. There will be a session zero to allow for new players to ask questions, and all players to be able to talk about their characters having connections from before the adventure starts. We will start at level 1. The initial adventure ends at level 5, but I hope the group will want to continue all the way to level 20! All official DnD 5.5e books will be available. If a player wants to use a subclass from the 2014 rules that will most likely be allowed. Homebrew classes and subclassed are up for discussion at the GM's discretion.

The current party

We have a Cleric, a Rogue, and a Sorcerer. Everyone is at level 1.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You will need an account on Discord and DnD Beyond to play. Links to the campaign and discord server will be provided after joining. https://discord.gg/nwgrNHC8

What Bippity18 brings to the table

My GM style focuses on collaborative storytelling and player-driven adventures. I use the rules as a strong foundation, but treat them as tools that support creativity and fun at the table. I enjoy helping players find their preferred playstyle while building a welcoming and engaging environment for both new and experienced gamers. My goal is always to create memorable stories together, guided by character choices and the roll of the dice. I will be running all combats through the DND Beyond VTT. I will make sure to add music and ambiance to tactical combat and puzzle solving. I do voices for a lot of major NPCs, but I don't do them very well. It's quite fun for me to try and make every NPC distinct. I am more often to stick to Rules as Written, but will always listen to my players if they want to change something.

Homebrew rules

My homebrew rules are up for discussion at our session zero, but I do have a few I prefer. 1. Healing potions - You can take a healing potion as a bonus action and roll the total healed, or use your action to take it and get the maximum possible hit points. 2. Critical Failures - Rolling a 1 is always a failure. If it is in social situations I will describe a larger effect (the merchant will need to be bribed to get any of his goods) and in combat a consequence (a martial may drop their weapon, or a wizards spell may hit an ally) 3. Crunchy crit - A critical hit gives you max damage on the first set of dice, and then you get to roll damage as normal. For example, if you hit with a greataxe plus divine smite, you would get to roll the standard 1d12 + 2d8, then add your modifier, then the max possible from those dice (12+16).

Safety

How Bippity18 creates a safe table

My goal as a Game Master is to create a table where every player feels welcome, respected, and comfortable participating in the story we create together. Tabletop roleplaying games are at their best when everyone feels safe to contribute, take creative risks, and enjoy the experience. Dungeons & Dragons was meant for everyone, and I strive to make sure my table reflects that spirit. Before the campaign begins, players will receive a Lines and Veils document. This allows everyone to privately indicate topics they do not want to appear in the game at all (Lines) and topics that may exist but should fade to black or stay off-screen (Veils). This helps us establish shared boundaries before play begins. During the game, we will use the X / N / O safety system: X – Stop the current content immediately. N – Move past or change the current scene. O – Everything is okay; the scene can continue. Players can communicate these signals either through Discord chat or through in-game messaging, whichever feels easiest and most comfortable in the moment. No explanation is required when using these tools. We will also hold a Session Zero before the campaign begins. During this session we will review table expectations, rules of conduct, character creation guidelines, and any safety tools we plan to use. This is also a chance for players to ask questions and share preferences about tone, themes, and playstyle. Respect for fellow players is essential. Discrimination or harassment will not be tolerated, including behavior directed at another player based on gender, race, sexual orientation, identity, or background. Everyone deserves to feel welcome at the table. Additional practices I encourage to help keep the table comfortable and enjoyable include: Open communication: Players are always welcome to message me privately if something at the table makes them uncomfortable. Breaks when needed: Anyone may request a short pause or break during play. Collaborative storytelling: Player input is valued, and feedback is always welcome. Respecting spotlight time: Everyone deserves moments for their character to shine. After-session check-ins: I’m happy to hear thoughts after a session so we can continue improving the experience together. The goal is simple: a fun, respectful, and collaborative game where everyone can enjoy the adventure together.
