About the adventure

The Graveworks once powered an empire. A towering necro-industrial factory built to forge undead soldiers for the Armies of Despair, it was believed destroyed in the war—buried beneath ruin, ash, and history. But now its smokestacks belch black smoke once more, its furnaces burn hot with stolen souls, and somewhere in its iron depths, production has begun again. Andrek Kara, heir to a fallen house of war profiteers, has reclaimed the Graveworks and reawakened the Foreman: a monstrous fusion of bone, brass, memory, and machinery built to oversee the factory’s relentless work. The dead are being processed again. The assembly lines are moving. Whatever sleeps below is not content to remain buried. Graveworks of Despair is a brutal, exploration-driven campaign set in a high-magic, early-industrial fantasy world scarred by war. This is a dungeon crawl for players who enjoy tension, caution, grim atmosphere, and hard choices. Expect deadly traps, environmental hazards, undead monstrosities, dwindling resources, hidden lore, and a dungeon that feels like it was built for a purpose rather than for fairness. This campaign is inspired by Tomb of Horrors, Tomb of Annihilation, old-school dungeon crawling, and attrition-heavy survival play. Every room matters. Every corridor can kill you. Recklessness is punished. Cleverness is rewarded. Death is permanent. There is no plot armor here. If your character dies, they stay dead. But the expedition continues. New scavengers, mercenaries, escaped prisoners, desperate treasure hunters, and doomed volunteers are always finding reasons to descend into the factory’s depths in search of profit, revenge, or forbidden knowledge. The story follows the expedition into the Graveworks—not any single hero. The dungeon remembers what you do. It remembers who dies. And it does not stop. What to expect: A high-lethality dungeon crawl A dark fantasy, early-industrial setting with necromantic machinery Permanent character death Brutal traps and environmental danger Tactical combat with meaningful consequences Exploration, resource management, and problem solving A persistent dungeon that reacts to player choices Grim tone, moral rot, and horrific war-era lore This game is for players who enjoy: High stakes Dangerous exploration Gritty dungeon crawling Creative solutions over reckless heroics Earning survival the hard way The factory is always hiring. Just don’t expect to leave it whole

About me

I'm currently a House DM at The Kobold Lounge, where I run 3 homebrew campaigns for adults, as well as an introductory game for kids and another for teens. I started with a weekly game at my house. Shortly after I learned to play, I had to move. To keep up with my new hobby, I found and joined ahome game that was posted online. It was a terrible experience. Nobody at the table was having fun except for the DM, who delighted in playing against his party. His players looked and sounded bored, almost miserable; I never went back. Instead, I decided to start my own game with one goal: to make sure everyone has fun! -- If money is an obstacle, please DM me. I care more about us having fun than making money. I put a lot of effort into becoming the DM I am today, I make immersive, creative content that literally over a hundred players have loved & that's why I'm here. I'd like to make a living doing this, but I care about my players & that's never going to change.--- I started running my first homebrew D&D campaign in 2016. Since then I've engaged in collaborative storytelling with a ton of amazing players. I enjoy being a Sandbox DM, and I love players with unique ideas they want to try. My tables, physical and virtual, are the place to try out that crazy character idea or homebrewed subclass. I want to DM on StartPlaying to reach a wide player base, bring people together to have a blast, and provide opportunities for players everywhere to participate in my games.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You'll need a dndbeyond account & a discord account. A mic is necessary, webcams encouraged but optional. A rudimentary understanding of the rules is helpful but not necessary.

What DM Nug Gnome brings to the table

In Graveworks of Despair, expect a different kind of table. This is not a story of destined heroes or guaranteed survival—this is a grim, brutal descent into a death-fueled machine that chews through the unprepared. But even here, there's room for flair, chaos, and unforgettable moments. Here's what I bring to the factory floor: Creative Carnage: Every encounter is handcrafted to challenge both your character and your creativity. Traps, hazards, and enemies won’t play fair—and neither should you. Smart tactics, clever ideas, and cooperative decision-making will be your best tools for survival. High-Risk Roleplay: NPCs are rare, strange, and dangerous. Expect interactions with unsettling constructs, broken minds, and war criminals reborn in brass and bone. Choices matter—but here, the consequences are often permanent. D&D Beyond Support: Full access to my digital content library to help you build your best (and possibly last) character. Go wild with class, race, and feat options before the factory gets its claws on you. Homebrew That Bites Back: The Graveworks is built on a foundation of brutal homebrew traps, creatures, and mechanics designed to challenge veteran players. If you’ve got a wild character concept or custom subclass, I’m all ears—just know the factory doesn’t care what’s on your character sheet.
