About the adventure

Join a team of detectives in an isolated, magic-soaked English village, fighting the sinister forces that threaten your community. Beacon-by-Marsh is a folk-horror sandbox setting, where magic is practiced openly, the wyrd is woven into daily life, and the deadliest monsters wear a smile and a suit. Depending on the mysteries you decide to solve, you could end up dealing with: - revenants and redcaps - a vampiric MLM - gentrifying fae nobility - an over-reaching government agency that claims to be Securing and Containing the "anomalies" in town Find the secrets buried in the woods, discover your own power, and work with your fellow weirdos to create a better world. *** I've made a dozen monsters based on creatures from British folklore, so there's a good chance you'll be tracking down creatures that'll be entirely new to you. I've also thrown in one or two modern cryptids, just for the fun of it! I'll draw on the work of Ursula K. Le Guin, NK Jemisin, and Tamsyn Muir for inspiration, (and Nicola Griffiths and Octavia Butler for the grittier parts). The setting and NPCs will be tailored to bring out the best in you and your PC, with motivations that clash or harmonise with yours. I encourage role-play and character-focused stories over crunch, and I will weave elements of your backstory into every mystery. Get in touch - I'm looking forward to creating an unforgettable story with you!

About me

Hello Adventurers! I'm Jess, I've been DM'ing for about four years. I started off playing D&D 5e and branched out to running Mothership, MOTW and Kids on Bikes. I'm having lots of fun running a found-family Mothership campaign, inspired by the work of Tamsyn Muir, Aliette de Bodard and N.K. Jemisin.

Character creation

Creating your character

We'll fill in the playbooks together before the game via Discord, using the charactermancer on Roll20; we'll all be starting at level zero. Think about which MOTW playbooks you're most interested in, and pick your favourite three. You can find a list of them here: https://evilhat.com/product/monster-of-the-week/ and then scroll down to "downloads". All of the standard playbooks are available, except "The Flake" and "The Chosen One", which wouldn't work in this setting. Think about what kind of character you'd like to play, what story arcs you're interested in exploring, and challenge yourself to sum up your idea in 10 words or fewer. If you're not sure how to do that, let me know - I'm always happy to help. As long as you follow the basic MOTW guidelines you'll be fine: 1. Act like you’re the hero in this story (because you are). 2. Make your own destiny. 3. Find the damn monsters and stop them. 4. Play your hunter like they’re a real person. I'd add to that: 5. Your character has to be able to cope with living in a realistic-ish modern setting, and 6. They need to be motivated to help others and work in a team I'd gently encourage you to avoid making characters who are lone wolves, loose cannons, or grizzled stoic silent types who only care about one (1) other person. Those don't really work in collaborative storytelling. Give your characters hopes, fears, strengths and flaws; it's much more fun that way!

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Ground Rules - Headphones and mic are essential, video is optional - We'll be playing via Discord and Roll20, so you'll need accounts ready to go for both - Stable internet connection is a must - Be Prepared: Be punctual, RSVP promptly, read your character sheet before the session, and pay me on time. Before your first game, there are a few things you need to do to get started: 1: Consent Checklist: Please fill in this checklist by Gehenna Gaming, inspired by Monte Cook's "Consent in Gaming": https://www.gehennagaming.com/resources/ We'll look through your checklist together during your mini-session zero to make sure I understand your needs. 2: Playbook Ideas Think about which playbooks you're most interested in, and pick your favourite three. You can find a list of them here: https://evilhat.com/product/monster-of-the-week/ and then scroll down to downloads All of the standard playbooks are available, except "The Flake" and "The Chosen One", which wouldn't work in this setting. 3: Character Ideas Think about what kind of character you'd like to play, what kind of story arcs you're interested in exploring, and challenge yourself to sum up your idea in 10 words or fewer. If you're not sure how to do that, let me know - I'm always happy to help. (NB - no lone wolves or grizzled loners; those don't really work in collaborative storytelling). 4: Mini-session zero Now you're ready for your one-to-one, mini session zero! We will set the time and date via StartPlaying.games, and we'll have the session zero via Discord. During the call, we'll run through character creation on Roll20, talk through your character concept, and make sure the campaign is a good fit. These four steps are mandatory for all players before their first game; this makes it possible for me to run a safe and fun game for everyone.

How Jess Green creates a safe table

I'm happy to avoid specific phobias. However, with this being a horror campaign set in the 1990s, you can expect elements of violence, cruelty, injustice (both fictional and real-world), mental and physical illness, body horror, and other run-of-the-mill horror themes. If my games had a film rating, it would be the UK Film Rating "15". All new players are expected to fill in a Consent in Gaming checklist by Gehenna Gaming, inspired by Monte Cook's "Consent in Gaming". This will help me to run a game that's safe and fun for everyone.
