About the adventure
Welcome to Briarholt Academy for Arcane Study, a hidden magical school tucked in an Appalachian holler—its lantern-lit halls and stone stairways carved straight into a red rock canyon. You’ll play third-year students navigating house rivalries, secret faculty agendas, and the unsettling truth that the school isn’t just a place of learning… it’s a containment system with a long memory. At Briarholt, students are shaped by four Houses—less about “good vs. evil,” more about what you believe magic is for: Ashwillow (Green) values discipline, steadiness, and care. They’re known for calm under pressure, precise work, and protective magic—healers, ward-crafters, and the calm before the storm. Ashwillow House Qualities: Discipline: “Do it the right way, even when no one’s watching.” Emotional control: “Feel it fully—then choose what you do with it.” Precision: “Small mistakes become wild spells. Ironreach (Red) lives for courage and decisive action. They train to respond fast, stand between danger and others, and lead from the front—heroes, guardians, and the ones who’d rather break a problem than watch it grow. Ironreach House Qualities: Courage: “Be brave enough to be the first one in.” Action: “A late decision is still a decision—just made late.” Loyalty: “We don’t leave our friends behind.” Larkspur (Yellow) embodies curiosity and clever innovation. They chase questions, test boundaries, and look for patterns others miss—researchers, inventors, and the students most likely to discover something world-changing… or unleash it. Larkspur House Qualities: Curiosity: “If it doesn’t make sense, you’re not done looking.” Innovation: “Try it once the safe way—then improve it.” Adaptability: “Change is a tool. Use it.” Gravesend (Blue) carries the school’s quiet pragmatism: endings, containment, and cleanup. They specialize in curses, seals, and what to do when something can’t be fixed—steady hands when the lantern light starts to fail. Gravesend House Qualities: Pragmatism: “Do what works, then do what’s right.” Moral resilience: “You can carry it and still keep going.” Secrecy: “Not every truth needs a crowd.” This game is for players who enjoy school-season drama, secrets, and solving problems creatively—with just enough danger to keep the lantern light feeling precious. You don’t need deep system mastery: I’ll keep rules support friendly and focus on immersive scenes, meaningful choices, and a finale you’ll enjoy.

About me
Hello everyone! My name is Jacob Hajek. I’ve been happily married to my wonderful wife since 2014, and together we share a love for animals—currently the proud companions of eight cats. I’ve enjoyed RPGs in many forms throughout my life: from paperback choose-your-own-adventure books, to JRPGs like Final Fantasy VII, to tabletop role-playing games. I began my TTRPG journey in 2006 with Dungeons & Dragons 3.5, briefly explored 4th Edition. My GM career started in 2012 with D&D 3.5, and I’ve since branched out to Powered by the Apocalypse, Savage Worlds, a fan-made Hogwarts system I ran for over a year, and both the Fantasy Flight Star Wars RPG and Genesys systems. In 2017, I began using D&D Beyond extensively and ran many campaigns there. More recently, I’ve fallen in love with Daggerheart—after running several games, it’s become my preferred system! I love crafting stories around my players. Because of that, I rarely run modules—but I’ll happily borrow ideas from them when they serve the narrative. Thank you for considering a seat at this (virtual) table. I’m excited to see where your story leads!

What Jacob brings to the table
AI content notice: I do use generative AI in my games to make images and music, however all of the AI content is curated and a lot is edited in Photoshop to clean it up. I will facilitate the story as it unfolds through your characters interaction with the world. I have scenes laid out with ambient music to set tone and mood. I enjoy using character voices when it adds to the scene, but am by no means a voice actor. I mostly use maps for combat, and I play adversaries with their motivations in mind, so rarely will there be a fight to the death or straight forward combat.
Homebrew rules
I am using a request the spotlight system to help players feel more comfortable taking the spotlight in virtual games. If you want to act you click the Request Spotlight button and you're added to a loose initiative. If you don't really want to act just yet, that's perfectly okay too, enjoy the scene until something comes up that you want to act on! :-)

How Jacob creates a safe table
I will reach out to everyone individually to compose a group Veils and Lines list. Should anything come up during the session, we will use the X card and reset the scene if needed.
