The PI*'s *Peculiar Inquisitors

The PI*'s *Peculiar Inquisitors

There is no more trust in the Guild for the citizens of Laagehoven. The only way to get any justice is by hiring those PIs, for a very fair price.

About the adventure

Mirabilis is a picturesque continent on an otherwise unexplored, or at least unreported, world. Rather, it certainly used to be. Whatever land undiscovered or otherwise had mostly shriveled up and died. Laagehoven was at the very center of the last decent dredges of society with it's crumbling fortress walls, decrepit and run down buildings, trash and sewage choking the streets, and a person begging on every corner. It's the outer ring of the city that sees the worst of it and as you get closer to the center the air of deception and facade grows thicker. The HERO Guild used to be the central power in Mirabilis but corruption has turned it faithless. Their eternal hunger for power and magic has literally leeched the land dry, leaving citizens to fend for themselves or be punished for not having enough. The Peculiar Inquisitors Office do their best to act with integrity while serving whatever justice needs to be served by whoever is willing to pay for it. It's not an honest living but at least it's a living. (Picture film noir style investigations but make it magical.) This is not a standard D&D module, it is a collection called One-Shot Wonders by Roll and Play Press that I am transforming into a campaign with my own plot. I will most be using D&D 2024 5e rules, with some 2014 mixed in, and a few homebrew rules!

About me

Hi there! Lifelong nerd, fantasy lover, and writer. I’m still relatively new to D&D but I have fully immersed myself in learning the mechanics, stretching my roleplay muscles, and managing groups.

Character creation

Creating your character

We will have a session zero where all of character creation can be done and any questions will be answered. We'll be using D&D Beyond for the character sheets and once session zero is planned, I will be sending a link so that everyone can access my sources. We will be starting at level 1. Stats will be Standard Array using 18/16/14/12/12/10.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You will need a D&D Beyond and Discord account. We will be using Owlbear Rodeo as the VTT which doesn't require an account for you to use.

What E.M. brings to the table

I do embrace the Rule of Cool and I love entertaining out-of-the-box ideas or creative solutions. I am not very good at most accents but I am quite good at embodying the personalities and mannerisms of NPCs. I want my players to have fun first and foremost and I will certainly forego a rule in favor of fun. Every session will have a healthy mix of roleplay and combat (even if it isn't necessarily party v enemy). TTRPG is collaborative storytelling at it's finest and I want to write this story together.

Homebrew rules

1) Giving or taking a healing potion can be an action or bonus action. If you want the max amount of heal, it’s an action. If you just wanna roll, it’s a bonus action. 2) Critical attack roll damage is the max damage plus the rolled damage. For example: 1d6+2 would be 8 + 1d6 + 2. 3) Death save fails gain 2 levels of exhaustion, up to 6 which is death. These do stack. So if you go down, fail a death save, are brought back up and then go back down and fail another, you’re at 4 levels of exhaustion. 4) No Lucky feat allowed. Instead, whenever you fail a saving throw or miss an attack roll, you gain one luck point up to 5. You can spend luck points to add to a roll (for example, you roll a 14 and add one luck point for 15) or you can spend 3 luck points to reroll but you must take the new roll. (ToV mechanic I've adopted.) 5) (ToV rule) Enemies/NPCs do not roll insight, perception, or stealth. They are static 10 + skill bonus. 6) Desperate Casting: When a player has no spell slots or abilities left, they can overexert themselves. They can take a level of exhaustion to cast any of their spells of 3rd level or lower. Or they could take 2 levels of exhaustion to cast their 4th-6th level spells.

Safety

How E.M. creates a safe table

I will have two Google form links pinned in the Discord chat; one that has an RPG Consent Checklist and one that will allow players to submit any concerns, questions, wishes for content or roleplay, etc. We will have Owlbear Rodeo up during the entire session and I have added an extension that allows a player to privately send me a yellow exclamation point or a red X if they are uncomfortable with any content being presented. Whenever this happens, I will find a stopping place to take a break so the player and I can talk individually before we return to session.
