About the adventure
The Mists rise and take you, tearing you from your path and delivering you into a nightmarish world—a warped reality steeped in malevolent intent and vile design. Strangers stand around you, and a cold crawls up your spine as fog presses in from every direction. Welcome to "Through the Mists" an adventure for veterans and beginners alike through the Dread Domains of Ravenloft. There will be ample opportunity for roleplay, strategy, and combat as you navigate dark and mysterious new domains. From the deserts of Har’Akir, to the ice-fields of Lamordia; the intrigues Dementlieu to the chaos of Darkon, what horrors will you have to endure on the journey to ascertain why you were chosen, and what will be required of you before you see home again. Or will you remain forever lost in the mist? Ravenloft is a horror setting, and as such contains topics and themes that are not typically found in other D&D settings. We will use a number of safety tools to ensure player safety, and respect everyone's needs and boundaries.

About me
Hello my friends! I am Uncle Casey, the storyteller for what I hope is your next adventure. I do my best to run a welcoming, safe, and accessible table; I believe creating felt safety encourages deeper, more enjoyable game experiences. To that end, I require my players to be open and affirming of everyone’s right to exist and be who they are without judgement. For characters I don’t limit species, and players are free to make their characters as self-representative (or not) as they choose. I have resources available (Unlimited Heroics, Combat Wheelchair, etc.) that can serve as a guide for any non-core mechanics you’d like to integrate. I want you to feel free to be you. Or be someone completely different. It’s your game. Me, a Brief History: (Reading optional) I started playing TTRPG's during junior high and high school, back in the 80's and early 90's. I joined a friend's D&D game, then started DMing for my friends. We tried out Talislanta, Rifts, Cyberpunk, Vampire, Aliens, Robotech and a few I've probably forgotten. Then life happened. I eventually earned a degree in theatre and a certification in stage combat choreography, I caught an arrow to my knee (got married), did community, amateur and professional theatre, adopted our children, left theatre to work with foster and adoptive families, that turned I into educating families about trauma and it's effects on our brains and bodies. I started playing D&D again in 2015 with 5e - my dice were literally older than the other players at the table. (side-note: I am a notorious dice goblin). It wasn't long until I started DMing again, both in-person and online. I've met some amazing people from around the world playing D&D online, as well as my fair share of cautionary tales. My strengths as a DM - I'm open and caring and belive in self-agency for players and characters. I'm big into backstories and love integrating them into campaigns. I'm always down to work with players, embellishing and expanding their character histories. Do you want a convoluted, world-shaking secret from your past threaten to rip apart the very fabric of reality? I'm in. Of course less dramatic backstories are welcome as well - some players like to focus on what's ahead of them, rather than what's in the past. I am flexible. I create as much of an open-world environment as possible, encouraging player agency and choice. I'm good at rolling with a sudden shift in party objectives. I encourage players, especially experienced players, to immerse themselves in their characters' moment, know what they know, and experience the game with fresh eyes. Yes, you probably are steeped in game lore and monster stats, and how refreshing would it be to just lose yourself in the moment and forget the meta-knowledge in the moment?

Creating your character
We will collaborate to create level 1 characters on DndBeyond pre-game and during session 0 (a free session) You'll be able to continue developing characters through the first gameplay session. We will run through House of Lament which will develop characters to level 3. I have access to all published 5e and 2024 content thru DndBeyond including partnered content.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
We will be using DndBeyond for Characters though the campaign link, Game Log, and Encounters, Roll20 and DndBeyond for Maps, and Discord for voice and optional video. Having accounts for all three entities will be necessary, free accounts are absolutely fine! The Beyond20 browser extension is also needed. We'll be using digital dice rolling through DndBeyond, straight from the character sheets.
What Storytime with Uncle Casey brings to the table
Functionally I will be providing the campaign/ source access through DndBeyond, maps through Roll20, and will be hosting on my Discord Server. I have access to all currently published material on DndBeyond - including the partnered content. I'll be using the 2024 rule set, Sublcasses can be from 2024 or 2014 - however, spells will need to be updated to the 2024 rules. Personally I will be providing a tailored experience for all players, focusing on integrating backstories, following through-lines, and creating as open-world feeling as possible, even within the dark and foreboding setting of the Domains of Dread. I will encourage role-play and provide optional non-combat paths in the majority of encounters (though, a combat-forward party won't be penalized, as long as your not a troop of malicious murder-hobo's!).
Homebrew rules
Multiclassing is only available at level 4 (your first class will need to have their subclass before you can multiclass) It must be motivated either by backstory or the game as we play, not random. No taking a 1 level dip into a class just to gain access to specific abilities (Sneak Attack, Rage, Lay on Hands, etc.) Multiclassing is a commitment to a second subclass Guns - for personal reasons I don't allow bullets and blackpowder to exist in my games. This means guns a) do force damage, b) are arcane based. This gives a benefit because it avoids the constant reloading issues. This is non-negotiable. Crits - Double the total of the dice roll instead of rolling extra dice.

How Storytime with Uncle Casey creates a safe table
Being a horror setting, we will encounter a wide variety of potentially difficult topics. Using a lines & veils survey, individual discussions, and session zero I will become familiar with players' Lines and Veils, and will have a number of safety tools for your use in game, and out of game if needed. I'll expect all players to respect each other's boundaries. Please note, as a DM I do not use or allow non-consensual sexual conduct in my games, described or implied. I'm fine with romance and consensual activity, however any physical interactions of that nature will be veiled. Many of the sensitive topics will be either inferred, or part of an NPC's backstory/ actions - not directed at the player characters. PC death is always a possibility, but I do not inflict scaring, limb-loss, or other permanent injury unless agreed upon by a Player. This will be addressed in our pre-session 0 survey. I also do not allow PVP. If characters want to train or spar, that's completing fine, but actual conflict will need to be handled without violence or magic.
